Just depends on his situation. If it is anoxic brain injury (which I doubt because they were not doing CPR on him) then it is directly proportional to how long he was without oxygen. For every minute without oxygen the risk of death increases 10%.
Could have had a stroke from some type of embolus or an aneurysm. Carotid artery disease is another differential, but its doubtful due to his age and health status (in shape basketball player).
Given his age/health status I would lean a lot toward a congenital disease.
