You shut your whore mouth
They were only 6 wins away from contending for the big 12!

I also love how the popular narrative is/was that UT was a bunch of elitists, bragging about money while their football program was mediocre.

I think you have the narrative wrong. It was that they were poor business partners, only interested in their own financial security, at the expense of everyone else.
We're exactly the opposite, and we have more $$$ than they do now.
We proved that you can be a good business partner to your conference mates without fricking them over and make more money doing it.

Let me put it this way. Sumlin is not the guy.
Texas A&M is the school though.
With the right coach the Aggies have the potential to reel off a string of CFP appearances.
A play action pass from a strong running game Aggies team competes for the CFP more often then not. Going spread formation without a Heisman QB and better then Heisman WR and no running game means... they will win their share of games. But they won't win the big prize.

They've been a "coaching hire away from greatness" for 78 straight years.

Really?
Apart from the late 80s/early 90s and possibly the last 5 years, I couldn't disagree with you more.
But I am kinda curious which specific eras (across 78 years) you viewed us as only being one hire away?

All of them.
Your winningest coach of all time was Slocum and he had 5 double digit win seasons during his 13 year tenure there. That's not bad but it's not elite either.
Sumlin will never sniff a CFP playoff appearance.

So it sounds like A&M fans are very happy to have him, right?

Yet Slocum is in the college football HOF...not elite though

Have you seen the requirements for it? Not exactly elite.
Edit: As an example, Jim Donnan is in despite getting fired by Georgia.

So are Switzer and Bear. Are you saying Slocum is in their class?
One of these things is not like the others.

Somebody has to pay off that half-billion dollars in debt for the stadium, the taxpayer won't bail you out like they did in 2009 with the $15 million loan to pay athletics dept. bills and salaries (after layoffs, of course).
That little nugget cost a Hispanic woman president her job, when she "inadvertently" let that cat out of the bag. All on par with racist aggy, who didn't let women and blacks attend their beloved school until the 1960s.

Neither Bear nor Slocum were caught in bed with one of their assistant coach's wife the night before a big bowl game.
So neither is in Switzer's class.

You're asking Chill98, but I'll offer my opinion.
I don't think it's an issue of Aggies being happy with him; it's that--up to this point--most of us haven't been unhappy.
Our university was making several enormous programmatic changes at once. The decision makers wanted to demonstrate a commitment to Sumlin, giving him time to implement his system and recruit his players, rather than making fan-like, knee-jerk reactions.
Overall, Ags tend not to be a people who look for immediate championships, "or else." Some of us hate that fact, accusing the powers that be of being loyal to a fault. But when you consider that only one team a year ultimately wins the prize, it's just not realistic to run a guy out of town for not winning the SEC West immediately.
That said, even Sumlin's staunchest supporters will expect a more favorable ROI soon.

Wasn't 2009 the same you the Longhorns went half a billion in debt with nothing to show for it?

Isn't ATM a half a billion dollars in debt with nothing to show for it right now?
