quote:Serious question: why do people think this? Do you not remember Sam Montgomery and Keke Mingo and all of our other super talented DE's that looked like shite in Chavis' scheme? We've had a bunch of first round talents over the years that were every bit as talented as Myles Garrett but his scheme was so docile that they looked average in college.
Garrett will thrive individually in Chavis' system
I'm seriously trying to figure out when Chavis suddenly switched to an "attacking" defense and not one that depends on 5* DB's shutting down wideouts while 5* d-linemen contain the QB and force him to throw it past our 5* DB's

They've given up 52 plays of 40+ yards since 2012 and they are bragging about their talent....

It's also a double standard that the Aggies get to use the narrative that Steele is a worthless coach because of 70 points against Clemson.........
Why is it always Clemson? For me the bigger indicator is the fact that Nick Saban fired him as DC and only brought him back on the staff for recruiting purposes. Many Bama fans say the LBs took a step back under his coaching, and I don't think it is all sour grapes like LSU fans and Chavis.
Also us Aggies can't easily forget the Baylor years.

Chavis is one of the longest tenured coaches in the entire SEC. He probably could have been a head coach easily by now if he wanted that. Or heck he probably could have been in the NFL by now. No coach hangs around the SEC for 20 years that isn't any good. He is a rare situation.

First of all the assumption is our talent has improved over Sumlin's time.
Secondly how can you blame defensive performances on talent and not coaching?

He took a rb and converted him to a corner and he said they are just as talented as Tennessee and LSU.....

Because I've watched your defense and seen the players, they weren't coached to tackle like girls and fold under physicality.....they were recruited that way.
He hasn't recruited anybody for his D but a player from ULL last year. He has a DT in Daylon but none of his DTs in his tenure shined as true freshman.....
So yeah you can blame your coach, I place accountability on players more often than coaching......great coaches have great players.

To be fair he is one of our fastest players. The kid was a five star, he has a ton of natural talent.
It is not like he is our CB1.

That should tell you even more about the situation, a 5 star rb was forced to play D
Posted on 8/13/15 at 6:27 pm to L S Usetheforce
that is a pretty talented athlete they moved from rb.
i think hes a senior that just wants the best opportunity to see the field.

quote:Saban also hired him which means that he's an impressive coach in some form or fashion. Keep in mind that he wasn't working with Saban-level talent in 2007 at Alabama, and he still led them to a top 25 defense. Yea he was fired for unknown reasons, but he still did fine considering Alabama's lack of talent at the time.
For me the bigger indicator is the fact that Nick Saban fired him as DC
quote:Do you have absolutely any stats or anything else to back that up? He coached Rolando McClain to Freshman All America and the 2008 Bama linebackers only allowed 74.1 yards rushing per game. Not really sure why anyone would think Bama's linebackers were a problem under Steele.
Many Bama fans say the LBs took a step back under his coaching
quote:His success at head coach has nothing to do with how good he is at being a DC. Just like Chavis, Steele is in a position he's never been in before with far more talent and resources to work with, we'll see how it turns out
Also us Aggies can't easily forget the Baylor years

How can I not blame the coaches? Teams with objectively less talent than us by recruiting rankings have had better defenses in that timeframe, like a Michigan State or last year Arkansas. The players we recruited at every level had at least one other offer. So if we have objectively more talent from the same pool of recruits every non elite program takes from how can anything but coaching explain why we had one of the worst defenses in the country?
I am being serious, no more hate jerking talk. I have come to respect your opinion but to me this is a huge disconnect in your logic.

A lot of them were not Sumlin's recruits in that time period. So how can our defense since 2012 be an indication of us recruiting soft players?

He wasn't forced. He wanted to because he still dreams of the NFL and he wasn't getting there as a RB. He was offered the switch and he took it to try to make his life better, like you or me taking a new job that maybe has a higher ceiling.
I don't see how anyone can hate on a kid willing to put in the extra work to better himself. That is the American Dream brother.

So your telling me he wouldn't have recieved the majority of snaps at RB at A&M.
Come on, it's desperation due to lack of talent.
They say it every day on the fricking radio on XM, it comes from Houston Nutt, Gino T, Leach, hell Spurrier even made fun of it a few days ago.
Coaches are going to paint a picture of roses preseason..........Chavis can't come out and say he has no true man up corner, or a LB he can trust to fill the whole for 4 quarters of power running.
Jordan Jefferson was the best QB at the Manning passing academy in 2011..........even Payton said it....
Its fricking "talk"
Results come from talent..........A&M doesn't have a talented D, Chavis will be able to mask some defiencies this season and bring the total yardage down but said in the interview he needed 3 years......

Look at you being diplomatic. If the threads could actually end on that note the Rant wouldnt have the daily Chavis thread.

And I'm sorry but you didn't out recruit Michigan State or Arkansas on D since 2012.

He didn't last year. Just like last year Tra Carson was going to get most of the snaps no matter what.

According to every recruiting service we did.

He got touches..........new running game coordinator wants to run between the tackles........He is bigger than Tra........
He never will have the opportunity because Chavis got to pick one guy on O besides Speedy and he picked him. This info comes from guys I know who are at practice everyday.

Not at all
You just proved you know nothing about A&M football once again.
Please stop trying so hard
