Alden told that to a group of us at a donor dinner. You're wrong.
Go ask the ghost of Commissioner Slive if we were added to the SEC because Pinkel was a good coach or because he needed the St. Louis, Kansas City, and the rest of Missouri (and even more so the state of Texas via A&M) sports tier cable subscribers in his back pocket as he proceeded to negotiate what was at the time an unprecedented lucrative deal with ESPN to launch the SEC Network.
Hey, I love Pinkel, but Slive was doing business.

SEC approached Mizzou to join a number of times over about 5 decades.
No one is inviting a school to join a conference because of the current coach.

It’s been proven many times that the state of Missouri doesn’t bring much for TVs in college sports. Missouri as a program always ranks towards the bottom of the conference in viewers. The state is all about the Cardinals, Chiefs and Blues. Missouri Tigers are the step child of sports in that state

I knew little about him. After the A&M game he refrained from the usual "we played a good team tonight" acknowledgment of the competition. The loss was 100% misfires from Missouri and nothing to do with the other team. I knew he was a prick after that.

It wasn’t the only reason, or even the biggest reason. The people / subscribers in STL/KC were the primary driver. But there was also a large factor in Mizzou being a good football team and Pinkel turning it around.
If Mizzou was Woody Woodenhoefer bad, they don;t get the invitation. That was directly from Alden.

And this is where most people got this wrong. The very fact that the state is as you say “ all about the Cardinals, Chiefs and Blues” is the VERY REASON that Missouri was an attractive market for Slive and ESPN. It comes down to how “sports tiers” were structured for cable subscribers at the time.
The tiers were structured to include a host of different sports. Want to see the Cardinals? Well, you’re going to have to buy the tier that includes say NASCAR and the pricing of that tier will reflect that you’re indirectly sending $1.50 (totally making this number up) to NASCAR whether you like it or not.
If enough sports tier subscribers wanted the SEC Network (they did as was anticipated and ultimately proven) then the tier would include it and ALL the tier subscribers would be indirectly paying something to the SEC.
Because Missouri has a robust appetite for watching professional sports there were plenty of sports tier subscribers to exploit…and it worked!

OK. I can accept this reasoning because for this to be attractive to ESPN there had to be enough interest in Mizzou for the some portion of the sports tier cable subscribers to demand that it be included. If Mizzou was that bad, it would have been less likely that the demand would have risen even to that low level.

If we were shopping for a smug douchebag former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier might fit in. I'm sure he'd never quit on his team.
Are you kidding?
Spurrier actually played the game for 13-14 years after high school

Dallaswho is a pathological liar, and he's very possibly Emily Drinkwuss himself
Let me repeat that: I do think that Dallaswho MIGHT BE Drinkwitz, posting on SECRANT, not kidding.
