1.) I am not sure how old you are, but Oklahoma got run over by K-State in 2003 (old history) 35-7 in the conference championship game. They got into the BCS championship game ranked at #2.
2.) There was a time when people argued that the conferences with a championship games had an unfair advantage because of the extra game. I think that there was a 2-week duration between the final regular season game and the championship game.
3.) If Notre Dame was currently 11-1 instead of 9-3 they would most likely be in the playoff without being in a conference competing for conference championship.

Some of us were having a conference championship ages before the idea of a playoff came around. If you need the playoff for your conference title to be meaningful - you're doing it wrong.
