Smoke took over a team that was in the college World Series finals the year before he showed up. Smoke took over a winning team. Vitello had to build what he currently has now. The situations between the 2 are drastically different. Now compare Vitello last 2 years compared to Smoke last 3 years at LSU.

As head coach? no he didn't. LSU won the CWS in 2000. His first year as head coach was 2002. LSU was eliminated in the super regionals by Tulane in 2001
