Is this the first assistant coach that Saban has had hired....

directly from his staff to a d-1 school. I understand the coaching tree he has just wondering if all of those coaches had gone to other schools first?

also, coached one year for Miles. So, not directly, in any case.

I don't know for sure, but JM is 49 or 50 so I think the time is now if he ever wanted to try head coaching in college.
