By definition it isn't but I think it 's the type of hits that they would like to eliminate if possible being that the WR is defenseless. There was no intent to hurt and he led with his shoulder.

Didn’t look like targeting to me. They put the replay up on the video board during the game and the folks sitting around me also didn’t think it was targeting.

We’d have gladly accepted the ejection however if they decided to rule otherwise.

We were surrounded by hog fans and they all thought it was targeting

Seems they've decided to go against the actual definition of targeting now

here is the actual written definition of "Targeting" in the official NCAA Rulebook for Football in 2024

quote:

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head
or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player
ARTICLE 4 No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below) When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6) (AR 9-1-4-I-VI)

He did not make forcible contact to the head or neck area.
so by rule, not targeting

so let's break down what's listed as indicators of targeting in the rule book one at a time

quote:

Launch A player leaving their feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area

Sage Ryan never completely left his feet, so he didn't launch
And he didn't make forcible contact to the head or neck area
so not targeting

quote:

A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground

ok, he did crouch, but the contact was not to the head or neck area
not targeting

quote:

Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area

no forcible contact to the head or neck area.
so, not targeting

quote:

Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

did not lead with crown of the helmet
so, not targeting

So if the flag stood, what is the coach supposed to tell the kid watching the film after the game?

I’m not sure a coach could/should tell him to do anything different.

I was watching the game and honestly didn’t appear to be targeting. Hard but clean hit with shoulder.
