I think the format was different back then.
In 1983 Bama and Texas both won their first 2 games but then played each other in game number 11 which Texas won 6-4 in 10 innings
Bama beat Arizona St. 6-0 as Texas beat Mich. in the next games.
Then in the final game Texas beat Bama 4-3 , if Bama had won there would have been another game.
The setup is far different now , it is a 2 bracket event and if you win the first 2 someone has to beat you twice to keep you out of the best of 3 championship series , in the 80s the two 2-0 teams played each other.

Giants beg to differ.

Fresno State had 31 losses that year, and had to win like a dozen games, including beating ASU, Georgia, and UNC two times each. They repeatedly played far above themselves, and IMO you see that a lot more in baseball than in any other sport.

quote:Back then, it was a double elimination all the way through. ESPN put a lot into the CWS series. But CBS comes along and wants to carry the final game. But, they had to have a guarantee of when that final game would be. So, it was double elimination up until the final and then it was winner take all (single elimination). That probably started in 1990 or so.
Then in the final game Texas beat Bama 4-3 , if Bama had won there would have been another game.

7. Maybe the NCAA will finally get their name right and quit trying to tie Ole Miss to them.
