I didn't say I think you're going to get worse, just that I don't see where the optimism is coming from.
Ok, and? Close to being top half isn't top half now is it?

also, Arkasnas was 0.3 ppg from being "top half".

Since Petrino has been at Arkansas, we've improved each year, on offense and defense. Why would this change? We no longer have Nutt, even though he did perform well against LSU. In '08, we had the weakest team I can remember, talent-wise, and Petrino still squeezed out 5 wins. I'm thinking we might have even won our last regular season game, even though we didn't go to a bowl. That must really suck for teams that lost to us that year, especially when they were so much better. I'm thinking Auburn was so upset about losing that they hired Chiz.

and i was saying where the optimism is coming from. there's no reason to think we'll get worse. there is reason to think we'll get better.

right, just pointing out how close we were to the magical "top half" designation, since that seems to be important to people. And there's reason to think we'll improve, so top half next year should be expected.

Crap, you're right. Point still stands, though.

Again, I expect y'all to be right in the middle of the pack on D, and in the top half on O, so it should be a pretty good year.

Our '08 team was the weakest team (relatively) we've had in 50 years. I would hope LSU was better. That's coaching. Wait...did we win?

nice. giving ya'll 5 yrs to win one. that shows lots of confidence. it's like saying "i don't know if we have the team to do it, but by the time 5 yrs goes by we will". our next 5 recruiting classes will be great.

Probably as it feels like we lost to everyone, I've tried to block '08 from my mind. Our weakest team of the decade.

The West is too tough, Arky doesn't recruit well enough, and Petrino isn't elite enough to overcome those 2 factors.

7 returning starters, no big losses of the ones gone (a few of the "starters" that left were splitting time, e.g. Broadway at CB, Crim at S, and should be easily replaced) Players now in the system for 4 full years Good D-Line that looks to get better Better depth than we've ever had on that side of the ball Lots of redshirt players there is reason to be optimistic. i'm not saying we'll be top of the SEC or even top-3, but i do expect improvement.
That's the smartest post I've ever read from a Hog fan. Shows he's paying attention and realistic. I think the Hogs will be tougher if TW turns out to be the man, I don't think they've shown that they're top 3 in the SEC YES but they're getting a lot closer.

i think you're mistaking expecting improvement with expecting to rule the SEC. like i said, i don't expect to be a top-3 defense, but i do expect 4th or 5th in scoring/total.
Experience: we return a lot of starters, the defense will have a ton of Sr/Jr.
Recruiting: a lot of younger guys got playing time and look to improve (Chris Smith, Eric Bennett, Byran Jones all got major PT as Freshmen last yr).
Coaching: as mentioned, we've improved every year. also, Steve Caldwell will be in his second second season, and he's a strong D coach. i expect him to have an impact on our running defense.

If he doesn't pan out, we have still have Brandon Mitchell and Jacoby Walker. Mitchell's fast and can hurl a football. Walker's just damn good.

Expecting a jump from 7th to 4th is a pretty huge jump and not based in any sort of reality. Is everyone else just going to stop playing defense? Arkansas will be 6th at best next year.

I asked the question. Do you think that will improve LSU's chances against us?

It shouldn't hurt, but hoping we're in the bottom half, defensively, won't help either.

I have no idea. I'm sure that will be a tough game regardless.

I'd be willing to bet it's close, late in the 4th.
