Why is someone’s religion important or relevant to sports?

Not every Polish sounding name is Jewish (or even Polish) - most aren't. In this case though and after an albeit cursory search, Drinkwitz is only popping up in the US (most of the cases) and Germany. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the handful of German Drinkwitz' don't come from a time frame in which Poland was a part of greater Germany or one of the various Imperial periods.

Also, some names like this wind up tracing to the UK and Ireland. Gotta remember that there's shared linguistic history, particularly with English and German and that's not mentioning the various invasions/marriages/rules of various Saxon kings of England.

I love that shite.

I'll give you some more that's somewhat SEC-related. The reason the famous photo of the VOL fans who had a sign that said, "Don't throw away a Pearl and expect to get a Dimond" was doubly hilarious to me isn't because it's mispelled but because there's a Jewish joke to be found there as well but it's so arcane that few would get it.

You see back in the day Jews didn't have traditional last names but instead followed a Semitic naming pattern very similar to Arabic (e.g. Moshe ben Yosef (Jewish naming convention) vs. Musaa bin Yusuf (Arabic) both mean Moses son of Joseph in English) but around the 17th Century last names were forced upon them, particularly in Germany.

That resulted in Jews taking a lot of place names and occupational names. Those names got shortened in the US which is the reason you have a lot of Jewish last names in the US like Gold, Pearl, and yes Dimond/Diamond.

I may do that some time. I'm one of those people that always wants to know why things are the way they are and history usually gives you a good idea.

Bookmark this, Rev.

See if you can get an MOU form from the Arkie AD for Prof to sign. It’ll be non-binding, but a good place to start.
