While I agree with you, counterpoint, one of the things that made college football special was the knowledge that every game mattered. In a different year Ohio State has no chance to compete for a championship after the losses to Oregon and Michigan.
I think it's better this way. Ohio State was a deserving national champion last year. But this year's season opener between Texas and OSU is a lot less meaningful than the matchup between the two teams in the second game back in 2005. That turned out to be an elimination game, as OSU only suffered the one defeat versus Texas, but both USC and Texas remained undefeated before playing against each other in the Rose Bowl at the end of the year.
So I do miss how much meaning each individual game had. But it is better this way.
