I copied your post. Then you edited, and it looked ridiculous.

So I wrote that.

I've followed it some, and it's been rough. I've avoided tv news today and the obligitory political posts on FB from both sides (not too bad today at least)....

Which is why all the people who overreact to tragic events and side with the scum who immediately try to politicize them, need to take a step back and ask themselves what exactly it is they are asking for. Do you really want to be forcibly putting people with relatively common conditions like bi-polar disorder in mental institutions to protect society? Do you really want to completely disarm the entire population to protect society? Because once you start taking away your own rights out of fear, it goes downhill quickly from there. It started with 9/11 and the Patriot Act and has steadily continued since then.

There are highly varying degrees of all mental disorders. I'm not saying the typical bi-polar person should be put away, but those that medical professionals can easily identify as severe and an immediate threat to themselves and those around them should be treated far more intensively than they currently are in a lot of situations.

The problem is that in these cases they're not always easily identifiable. Someone could have relatively mild issues up to this point and have a "break" that causes violent behavior such as this. It's not much different then people who very unexpectedly commit suicide but were viewed as many as being well-adjusted enough to function in society. Sometimes things happen.

That said, mental healthcare is woefully underfunded in this country. Even for those with insurance, sitting down with a psychologist and receiving cognitive therapy will cost you a pretty penny out of pocket. And the cost to institutionalize someone. Then you have to look at the rubrics used to diagnose people with psychological issues.

It's not an exact science by any means but I'd rather see a legitimate talk about mental healthcare in this country then this bullshite on gun control and video games.

I'll admit that I know very little about mental disorders, so my opinion is less informed on the issue than most opinions I give. That said, I know when I see someone pushing a buggy down the middle of a street cussing at themselves that they don't need to be in society. They need to be in an institution where they can be properly cared for. And I feel pretty confident in the fact that many prisoners would be much better served by being put in a mental hospital than prison.

I think most would agree with that. But it's a Catch 22. Who is going to pay for it? Those people pushing the buggy certainly can't afford it. You have a pretty large push to eliminate those services (which often get lumped in with "welfare").

And the cray cray pushing the buggy isn't the one shooting up schools and malls right now either.

ETA: The solution is far far bigger and more complicated then institutionalizing people.

Put the cart pushers on giant hamster wheels hooked up to power plants. Two birds and such.
