Ok..but wouldn't you agree that your situtation is a BIT different than MD, who went to MIAMI? If we was out in his hometown with his buddies that's one thing, to be in South Florida is another.

Well then your newspaper shouldn't start the article off with, "As his mother lay dying in her Birmingham home, Marcell Dareus couldn't cope. He had to get away." That makes it sound like it was an any day now situation. If not, piss-poor writing by that fellow.
Klauser is a piss poor writer. And I agree, he shouldn't have put that in there. He should have just stated the facts instead of trying to develop a story. And remember this is Klauser's Story, not Marcel's.
How many times have you read an article and the author is going the frick off about what so-so said, and then you watch the video of the press conference and it wasn't that big of a deal?
My point is, these writers twist and manipulate shite to make it sound better or more interesting.

If you are a current athlete and tell them to go pound sand they pull your elgibility and laugh back at you. They can at will get this information from the schools if they ask it of a player you either give it up or you give up your time at college, that's your choice. They can't do anything after you've left but while you're there.
While I somewhat agree with you that the NCAA does have a certain amount of leverage on the athletes through the member institutions, here's where I think that line of reasoning falls short:
Let's say an athlete refuses to submit his cellphone records. The NCAA drops the hammer because the athlete still has eligibility remaining. The athlete retains counsel and sues the NCAA for basically what amounts to wrongful termination. (And if you don't think lawyers from around the country wouldn't be lined up for what could be a precedent-setting, landmark case...) Without hard evidence, and a plaintiff (athlete) that is already miles ahead of the defendant (NCAA) in the sympathy game in front of the jury, I'm not sure the NCAA wants to risk a civil trial. You have to understand the way most bureaucracies work - they live in fear of litigation.

You Tide fans are as bad as the Tenn. fans who were defending their players for beating a couple of guys senseless at a night club. One being an off-duty cop who tried to break up the brawl. * to 10 players punching and kicking a defenseless man on the floor. And the way the fans sounded, they were almost making the players into victims. Sickening. This whole story about leaving your mother on her death bed stinks to high heaven. He is just a sweet little victim, keep telling your self that! Pathetic, that is what fans have become.

I honestly don't believe I would be overly concerned if I was a Bammer fan...he may lose a game or two of eligibility at the most....
Not if he gets caught making up stuff. Remember the OSU WR last year.
Yeah, boils down to Dez Bryant lost eligibility because he lied.

Getting back to the parties.. it was posted on a Bama site a couple of days ago that there were several parties over the course of May.
Also, another player was named as being involved, from Pittsburgh:

quote:
Sources told SportsBusiness Journal there were multiple trips to South Florida by college players, including a May 15 trip in which multiple college football players attended Gore's pool party during the day and a party later that Saturday night at South Beach nightclub Cameo. Gore in a telephone interview said that he had the party at his house and partied later that night at the club, adding that he did not see whether those players were there but could not say for certain that they were not.
"I don't even know those guys. There were a lot of people there; it was crazy," Gore said. He added that no agent or financial adviser, or other person involved in the athlete representation business paid for his party. "I paid for my own party," Gore said.
Also, another player was named as being involved, from Pittsburgh:

University of Pittsburgh star defensive end Greg Romeus attended San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore's South Beach party in May, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.
Romeus is from nearby Coral Springs, Fla., so it's plausible that the NFL draft prospect could have arranged for his own transportation to the pool party at Gore's residence.
We're told that Romeus is prepared for any inquiries about how he came to be at the party.

You obviously don't have much real world experience. Nobody "drops the hammer" w/o documentation and there are plenty of ways to get the info w/o demanding an athlete turn over his phone records. People talk...and with the right questions, they'll lead you to add'l info; step by step until the case is built.
The remainder of your diatribe isn't worth quoting.

On that whole article thing...Writer is horrible, terrible research. Editor should be blasted for letting that hit the papers. Until Dareus meets with the NCAA and says what happened out of his own mouth, everything is pretty much speculation. What he actually says could be totally different from what was printed. I'm gonna wait and see how it plays out from here. If he ended up doing nothing to cost him, I hope he's playing this year. If he did take benefits, he needs to be gone, simple as that. The players need to know these agents and their runners are going to cost them in the long run and this would certainly set the example IF he did take anything.

You obviously don't have very much in the way of reading comprehension skills. Maybe if you spent a little more time reading and digesting information and a little less time posting (18,000+, really???) you may have gotten the point. The point was the NCAA wouldn't summarily "drop the hammer" without documentation or proof. And without the power of subpoena (duces tecum), the threat of voiding a player's eligibility merely because that player doesn't jump through hoops to self-incriminate himself just because the NCAA ask for his cellphone bills/records is an empty one.
Do try to keep up next time...

So your mom is dying and you go shake your arse in Miami...quality guy there! I didn't want to go there but this puzzles me too. He wasn't even there when his mom died? WTF? eta: I think they might be trying to play the sympathy card here.
Marcell has not lived with his mom for years. His Scoutmaster has legal guardianship over Marcell and his siblings. His father died years ago and his mother has been sick for years. There was a good write up about his home life when he was being recruited and the man and wife that is his legal guardians. After signing with Alabama they would drive to Tuscaloosa each Sunday so he could go to church. Marcell is not a bad kid.
