Fifty years ago, Georgia Tech left the SEC - Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It was legal at the time (I am not going to say otherwise) but let's not pretend everyone is playing on the same field. Smart coaches (like Saban) make the most out of every rule.
Reputation, coaching (to include liberal use of graduate assistants), attention to detail and facilities are what make Bama what it is.

What I saw was with coaches and only used current coaches. So Urban was 2nd and I guess his time at Florida was included.
