I think they grabbed those 2 to now link the 2 end points while the SEC only goes to the next adjoining states.

Think about it...would the SEC EVER reach the West Coast, even if it wound up being 1 of the 2 remaining conferences?

I'm all for adding big markets and brands as long as it lends to meaningful rivalry games.

North Carolina vs South Carolina?

While I think parts of them are what we'd consider "The South," I think what OP was going for more than anything else was contiguous rather than cultural.
