The redshirt rule does need to change, and it needs to change in a way that eliminates any magic number of games. The four-game rule was passed in 2018 to replace an often confusing rule that allowed redshirt years for players who sat out of games completely or who were injured after playing in only a few games. To eliminate confusion and to allow teams to selectively use redshirting players to fill roster gaps because of injury, the rule was altered so that any player who played in four games or fewer and hadn’t previously redshirted was allowed to take a redshirt. It was later amended so that postseason games didn’t count against the four-game total.

At the time, the change was player-friendly and team-friendly. But changes in transfer rules and the inception of NIL payments allowed players to weaponize the rule. A player could make a deal with a school, get paid into October and then shut himself down with the intention of entering the transfer portal and getting a deal somewhere else.
