Where did "Plainsmen" come from?
Cause its in the flat SE quadrant of the state as opposed to the hills of the Appalachians in the NW quadrant + the line about the "loviest little village on the plains" from the aforementioned poem.

The first line from Oliver Goldsmith's poem "The Deserted Village" is
"Sweet Auburn! Loveliest village on the plain."
Tigers are mentioned in the same poem, ("where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey..." ) thus the origin of our mascot.
Auburn pre-existed the "War Between the States", so there is no connection to that war other than what another poster mentioned about the origin of our battle cry "War Eagle".
The poem was written about a village in England. The name of Auburn (the town) was taken from that poem and then the University's name was changed to what everybody was already calling it anyway. Thus, boys who came from Auburn were referred to as "Plainsmen".
The plain referred to in the case of Auburn, Alabama is the East Gulf Coastal Plain which covers most of Alabama and Mississippi, part of the panhandle of Florida and a small part of Southeastern Louisiana.
Here's a map of the Physiographical Areas of the U.S., if anyone is interested.

Most people from Louisiana know this, we just choose to disassociate the fact that a promenient Union general founded LSU. It is like if you had an evil father(in this case grandfather), there is nothing you can do about it.
The way I look at it, LSU purged itself of that when the campus moved to Baton Rouge.

And didn't the University Grays all die at Gettysburg?

While terrible, at least your campus wasn't burned to the ground, with only a handful of buildings still left from the original campus in 1831.

I know the op was asking about SEC teams, here is a list of D-1 teams whose mascots might be traced to the CW (although loosely). If a team has the audacity to call them selves "yankees", I see nothing wrong with Rebels. Another topic I know......
Missouri Tigers
LSU Tigers
NC Tar Heels
Michigan Wolverines
Wisconsin Badgers

Our campus served as a hospital for both sides during the war.

My great grandmother(Mother Earl)used to tell that Auburn was called "The lowest pickle in the barrel".Or "lovelist barrel on the stagecoach". Or maybe knot.
Just give me a sec and I'm sure it will become on the plain,or pain?

One of Tennessee's own, Andrew frickin Jackson, saved NOLA's arse in 1812 and we further cemented the "Volunteer" name when Davy frickin Crockett and TENNESSEE's own Sam Houston saved the GODFORSAKEN state of Texas and Houston became that state's first governor and the namesake of its largest and FATTEST city.
