Although I don't care at all about the sport I'm glad there are 2 races each year in Talladega with roughly 300,000 race fans between the 2 annual races making a significant contribution to Alabama's economy.

It has a huge following. People from Michigan and Ohio pour into Charlotte for the races here.

There are two major misconceptions when it comes to NASCAR fans:
--One is that people assume all "rednecks" live in the South.
--The other is that the overwhelming majority of fans are "rednecks"
I fall into the latter category

There were only 2 culture clashes that I feared in A&M coming to the SEC:
1. Mustard or Vinegar based BBQ
2. NASCAR
I'm glad to know that at least one of the 2 was a myth. I still will never understand #1 though. In truth I would probably go to a NASCAR event if I had VIP seating given to me or could be inside the track, that is assuming I don't actually have to watch the race and I can expense the alcohol.

I think nascar fans are nascar fans first second third and fourth
with really nothing else in there
now some ppl who love CFB/NFL/MLB/NBA might watch some nascar (I don't, never have, it's tardtastic IMO) but doubt it would be a top five choice for many over here

For me, NASCAR is #3 behind Football (CFB and NFL) and basketball (NBA)

I couldn't care less about NASCAR. My dad loves it, but he's the farthest thing from a redneck. That is one of the big misconceptions.

I only watched it when Cartman drove the Vagasil car. Now it sucks without him being stupid and poor.

Usual reaction when people find out I'm a NASCAR fan is "what?! black people like NASCAR?!"

see Bama,Auburn,Miss State, and Arky Posters. Though I do mildly follow the sport.
This is just dumb. Then admitting to following mildly? You must not know how many redneck dirties live in Florida, lol.
I fricking hate nascar and everything about it. When the highlights come on ESPN, I turn it immediately.

The people who down it without knowing anything about it and spew the typical "they only left turn hurr" garbage are just as ignorant as the jorts and mullet crowd that are professed to support it.
Agreed.
I grew up watching NASCAR and still follow it, though not nearly as closely as I used to. I've been going to the spring Talladega race for a while with a buddy of mine and it kills me the people who you see show up for it. I'd say half the folks there only go to the race because they feel a need to join in with the stereotype that since they're redneck/white trash they have to like NASCAR. I've just never seen so many people spend so much time/money/effort to go get piss arse drunk, and I say that having been to a lot of CFB games. I still like racing, can't say the same about the fans.
And just for the record, I like NASCAR and DID graduate from the school I support.

I like NASCAR. I've never been to a race and no I didn't graduate from Auburn. To all the haters: DWI.
