Seriously, here is a list off the top of my head of schools with animal mascots that could conceivably be living wild on their campuses:
Maryland--Terrapins
TCU--Horned Frogs
Iowa--Hawkeyes
Oregon--Ducks
Oregon State--Beavers
Washington State--Cougars
BYU--Cougars
Arizona--Wildcats
Louisville--Cardinals
USM--Golden Eagles
Rice--Owls
And of the non-animal mascots, these would have their mascots on their campuses in some form, most likely:
Wake Forest--Demon Deacons (I think all Baptists are Demons, but that is just me!
)
Virginia Tech--Hokies (Isn't a hokie just someone who acts kind of, well, hokey?
)
FSU--Seninoles (Surely there must be a token somewhere)
Miami--Hurricanes (as in Andrew, at least occasionally)
Purdue--Boilermakers (I guess, although I don't pretend to know exactly what a Boilermaker is)
Indiana--Hoosiers (needs no explanation)
Nebraska--Cornhuskers (Does anybody who lives in Nebraska do anything BUT husk corn?)
Notre Dame--Fightin' Irish (well, if it is Irish, it most likely will drink and fight.....)
Maryland--Terrapins
TCU--Horned Frogs
Iowa--Hawkeyes
Oregon--Ducks
Oregon State--Beavers
Washington State--Cougars
BYU--Cougars
Arizona--Wildcats
Louisville--Cardinals
USM--Golden Eagles
Rice--Owls

Since when do universities have cougars and wildcats running around naturally on their campus?

You must not be that familiar with the western United States.
Cougars regularly are spotted in Boulder, Colorado. My brother-in-law's mom had a cougar in sight of her backyard in southern California.
The BYU campus is in prime cougar habitat, as is the Washington State campus, so it would surprise me if there were not cougars in the immediate vicinity, who MIGHT wander down out of the foothills onto campus late at night.
In the case of Arizona, the desert around Tucson is full of bobcats, so I would be very surprised if one had not wandered onto campus on occasion.....it is highly likely that they do so regularly....

True. Also, now that I think about it, my favorite professor in college was a cougar.

You think its shameful to have roosters?

Id rather there be no cocks than no pussies.

Stanford has trees on campus.

I won't give you a PETA-style lecture, but......

Yeah but everyone loves being a smartass every once and a while
.

I dont think we would be allowed to have that live mascot on the sidelines if he was bred to fight.. he'd be roided up and out of control.

Boilermakers (I guess, although I don't pretend to know exactly what a Boilermaker is)

You were off on a few:
Some more:
South Dakota - Cyotes
South Dakota State - Jackrabbits
North Dakota State - Bison
Maine - Black Bears
Ohio - Bobcats
Arkansas - Razorbacks
Colorado - Buffaloes
Colorado State - Rams (a bit of a stretch here because they live at such high altitutes)
Wisconsin - Badger
Also, using people mascots is a bit stupid. The OP was about wildlife so saying "well you could see a Cornhusker in Nebraska" is missing the point.

Maryland--Terrapins
TCU--Horned Frogs
Iowa--Hawkeyes There is no such animal as a "Hawkeye." If you meant the actual eyes of a hawk, then fine. Also, a "Hawkeye" can mean a resident of Iowa, just as a "Hoosier" can be a person from Indiana.
Oregon--Ducks
Oregon State--Beavers
Washington State--Cougars
BYU--Cougars
Arizona--Wildcats Wildcats are an Old World animal. There are no "wildcats" in this hemisphere.Louisville--Cardinals
USM--Golden Eagles Nope. Native to the West, no the South.
Rice--Owls

You do know how big a fricking Cougar is don't you? I seriously doubt Cougars (although there is likely one within 20 miles or so) are going to be on BYU's campus. Same for the Wildcat.
