If Fields isn’t going to start this year barring an injury to Fromm or Fromm’s world imploding, why doesn’t he redshirt?
Statistics show that the majority of successful NFL quarterbacks have used all of their college eligibility. Fields isn’t doing himself any favors insisting on playing this season as a true freshman in mop up time when he could save his eligibility for later years.
They can always yank his redshirt this year if they need to.

This really is a strange problem to have, but here we are. The biggest issue is that we don't have an obvious 3rd QB if one of them were to transfer at the moment which is concerning.
Ultimately, I think the solution is to use a 2 QB system for a variety of reasons. Generally I'm opposed to that, but in this case it's essentially a necessity. Fromm has proven he is cool and solid under pressure. You can't teach that, it's huge. While Fields has all the intangibles otherwise, we don't know about how he is in pressure situations yet.
Currently Fromm is the unquestioned starter and leader of this team, he has the locker room behind him. That too is huge, so getting into a Bryant/Lawrence situation and benching him could cause major issues with the players. I'm not suggesting Fromm get benched, far from it, just using that as an example.
Fields bringing the extra dimension of being mobile however changes the way teams have to gameplan for UGA. He needs to play far more to get reps, to show more of what he's capable of to keep defenses off balance, and at the end of the day we can't afford to lose him with no clear viable backup in place.
You play both in every game evenly, not just a few packages for Fields here and there, until you find yourself in a tight game or where you're playing from behind, and one of them is the clear answer in that game, you play the hot hand for the duration of that game, and start over the following week. Fromm's not a stats guy, so switching them out doesn't effect him that way (he's not a Heisman candidate), not so much of a rhythm guy that he would get thrown off, and he seems mature enough to handle sharing the role.
This gives extra dimension to the offense, allows Fields to grow, keeps him happy, keeps the locker room stable, and at the end of the day gives your team the best chance to win which is what it's all about. If one quarterback completely separates himself then so be it, you revert to a clear starter while inserting the other in strategic situations.
In the meantime recruit QB like hell to get solid backups with class separation in place so you have both viable alternatives if needed

The best QB should play 1st string. Kirby has stated that practice is competition for starting the game. Fromm would understand if Fields starts and would work harder next week.

We'll have to see how Fromm does this year and how much he has developed. He hasn't had a challenge this year. Next spring they compete and the best man plays. Patience is the only option.

This.
Fields will get more meaningful snaps as the year goes on and he will take the job in 2019. He’s too good to keep down - he’s DeShaun Watson.

Fromm would be transferring if so

Fields got the entire 4th quarter of that game

Exactly, except Fields will transfer unlike Shockley and I can't blame him if he does.

I hope it doesn't come to that, but honestly, I'd rather it be Fromm. Fromm's good, but I'll take talent every day over experience.

UGA will lose one of Fromm/Fields next year. Both will continue to play this year, and if Fields comes into his own next year ... then Fromm is out
QB is the one position depth will be a HUGE concern under the new rules. Star QB's are no longer going to wait for their turn

Kirby learned from his old master in the NCG last year. Let Fromm keep playing and keep as little film as possible on Fields. Then switch QBs at half whenever we have to play BAMA and let Fields take us to the promised land.

The only thing we really know for sure is one will win the job and the other will finish their career at another school.
Fromm is not a 3 & out NFL QB, so that would require Fields to patiently wait his turn for 3 years. Not happening.
On the flip side, if Fields gets the job, say next season, I don’t see Fromm transferring out like Bryant. Fromm is in a similar situation as Hurts, where he can graduate early and play immediately.
If I were to guess, I think Fields ultimately takes over. I know Kirby loves Fromm but he wants to win. The only way to beat Bama is to have a dynamic QB.

I'm not sure he's a 4 and out NFL QB. Aaron Murray was a significantly better passer than Fromm and put up prolific numbers and he lasted what, two to three years as a backup and then cut? He's a very good college QB who manages a game well, but he can't take over a game if needed.

Whichever transfers is going to immediately become the biggest free agent in CFB history. God I hope LSU can land whichever one leaves.
What a problem to have. You have a generational QB on the bench but the young starter is playing too good to take him out.

What is the ultimate outcome there?
From goes pro after his junior year
this is my honest prediction

quote:no, not unless Fields transfers out
UGA will definitely lose one of them
Fromm is a fierce competitor and truly loves UGA
I do not see him transferring
and I disagree with WG; Fromm has demonstrated that he can beat Alabama, we lost the NCG on a defensive missed assignment, not because Fromm did not play well enough to win
one more thing, Fromm has the "it" factor
he is a winner; we don't know if Fields has that going for him or not
