Tennessee defense right now is first in the SEC in yards per play, first in sacks and second in tackles for loss. Held Rattler to 169 passing yards and no touchdown passes.

They look almost identical to ours.

It's too early to tell. It's the best DL we've had in a while. Particularly on the edges, but that's all I feel comfortable saying at this point.

I'd say a 5 game sample is enough to know you've got a good squad

Linebackers are looking good as an overall unit as well.
Our secondary is the weak link but the dline and linebackers played so well on Saturday that it made them look competent actually.

their D line is stout and I like their edge guys as well.

That one dude at LB, Beasly, is a stud.

Their db's need work

IMO

The SOS up to this point has been pretty weak. We get into the meat of it after the bye and will know more.

Our next 3 games are:

vs A&M
@ Bama
@ UK

We're getting better and I'm happy to see it, but it's hard to tell by how much until the competetion level picks up. jmo

We have taken a massive leap since the Florida game on defense as an entire unit. That's for sure. Vols always take 5 games before we start clicking on both sides of the ball it seems.

On offense, the oline and the running game are playing lights out. Milton is still average overall at best, but he is definitely capable of a few more Clemson type of outings when he's on.

I think the question is in the competition we’ve played.

This is fair. I think I'm just jaded over the last 15 years & I can admit that. Beasley is a stud at LB and the young guys are stepping up after the injury to Pili. I need to see several more good to strong performances from the secondary before I can get the bad taste out of my mouth from the last few years. Don't need great - just consistently above average and i'd be happy. Martinez and his track record doesn't inspire confidence though.

Overall I'm probably too critical on the whole. We'll see

The front 7 appears to be very, very good while the secondary is serviceable but still prone to busts like every Willie Martinez secondary in history. But it didn’t really matter Saturday with Rattler running for his life every other play. #27 Pearce is a straight goon off the edge and easily Tennessee’s best pass rusher since Derek Barnett.

I’m cautiously optimistic but the goat rodeo that happened in the first half against Florida was one of the worst defensive showings I’ve seen in my life so who knows

I think Tennessee’s defense has looked better than in recent years, excluding the UF game.

Depends on which one shows up. Complete Jekyll and Hyde. Against USCe...they looked great. Against Florida, they were worse than horrible (Mertz was 19/24 and Etienne rushed for 172 yards...7.5 per carry). They could not tackle anyone against UF...and were dropping people behind the line vs USCe.
