Laugh if you want, but it's true.
The only thing that holds OM's law school back from ranking higher on lists is their tuition. Too many of those lists put a LOT of weight on how much a school costs.
The education is highly regarded and usually at the top of the "best bang for you buck" lists. According to most rankings you're just NOT prestigious if you don't charge an arm and a leg, though.
The medical school is also well-regarded, though I didn't attend it so I don't know as much about it.

What's the better school? If I'm not mistaken state has a better engineering program and ole miss has the better?
Yeah, State is more known for the engineering and ag stuff, Ole Miss is more known for liberal arts and biological sciences. Ole Miss has top programs in international relations, pharmacy, English, and GETTIN' DRUNK AND POUNDIN' PUSSY AMIRITE BRO UP TOP.

yeah, MS politicians go over well nationally as well as a boner in sweatpants.

Mississippi is largely an agriculture state. State is the Ag school all the farmers go to. So it's a combination of that and Ole Miss grads typically don't stay in Mississippi after they get out.
This is exactly the reason why Mississippi has more State fans.
MSU is largely the engineering and Ag school in the state--have you seen Mississippi? It's fields upon fields as far as the eye can see. So if your from the state, much of what you deal with in commerce is driven by what the state produces.
Ole Miss the past two years has enrolled more students from out-of-state, than in-state in their freshman classes. Ole Miss has a much more attractive draw for out-of-state students, period.
Mississippi State really is the "people's school" of Mississippi, meaning, they accomplish their goal of educating their own. Unfortunately, and let's not split hairs here, it's a fact Mississippi is dead last in the Union in education. Therefore, the admission standards to MSU is slightly above possessing a pulse. On their website, it states in plain English that a 700 out of 1600 on the SAT and a 2.0 in HS is automatic acceptance.
If you wanted to stay in-state for school and work in one of the limited economic industries in your home state when you graduate, why wouldn't you go to MSU?
The in-state love of MSU is not hard to understand, once you live here. Ole Miss is truthfully a regional school now, drawing thousands of kids from Dallas, Memphis, and Atlanta alone. Oxford is an awesome place to visit (lacks the culture shock for city kids that Starkville has, though its great in its own right), and the student population is diverse enough to where you can comfortably go without feeling that your surrounded by in-state kids, who quite plainly, you wouldn't have much in common with.

The Ole MIss University Hospital in Mississippi preformed the first open heart transplant in the world, and does have one of the best medical schools (looked it up) and considering how Mississippi is a dip shite state that is one of the 5 poorest states, a top 20 medical program is impressive

Not to jab at Miss State or anything but they're pretty meh as far as athletics goes.
In the last 40 years:
State has won the SEC West in football- Ole Miss hasnt
State has won the SEC Title twice in basketball- won 3 SEC Tourneys- and been a to Final Four- OM only owns 2 SEC Tourney titles
State has been to Omaha 8 times- Ole Miss 0
If State athletics are "pretty meh"- then what the hell is Ole Miss?

This. Every school has a CEO. You can be the CEO of a goddamn gravel mine in Noxubee county and, guess what, you're a still a "CEO" technically speaking.
