I think the bigger issue is all these HS kids are going to soon quit being recruited as much due to the fact of how many of them are leaving after 1 or 2 years. That's quite a bit of money schools are spending on a player only for them to leave after developing them. And that's true before you even take NIL into account.
Look at the money spent on guys like Ffrench. Texas paid him $1,000,000 for absolutely no production, then he leaves. Why not use that million on someone who has proven ready to play?

Most of those older guys have come through the portal, I would think.
Indiana’s portal rankings the last 4 seasons. 24/7 listed first, On3 second.
2025: #25; #13
2024: #30; #10
2023: #19; #13
2022: #29; #20
Two things, they have consistently had good but not great transfer classes. On3 did a MUCH better job.

Portal rankings are useless. Over 10K kids in the portal. Nobody can accurately rank these players in such a short time. Just have to trust your coaches.

This offseason is Sark’s Hail Mary attempt before the boosters at Texas fire him. I could see Texas spending more than 40M on their roster next year. Easily
The only one who has truly been able to use the portal effectively is Indiana. Others just chase names

Because what if that $1 million kid does end up being great. By the time the whole world realizes it he won’t cost $1 million, he will cost $3 million and still go to the highest bidder.
The only “cheap” players who have proven to be ready to play usually don’t pan out; they aren’t an improvement; just a flawed incoming 3 star replacing a flawed outgoing 3 star.
If it were so simple everyone would be doing it.

Well, so much for that. I will say that Indiana is a huge outlier. Makes one wonder about those cheating allegations. If they win it will be the first team to win that was outside the top 20 in a long time. Maybe ever. We already know Michigan was cheating, so it wouldn’t be the first.

Nobody knows. A stellar QB has turned out to be a good investment. Everything else, mileage varies

You won't be getting the benefit of the doubt going forward.
