Not allowing black players until the early 1970's (thanks, Vaught), our insistence on embodying this mythical idea of the "Old South" to a point that was off-putting to talented black athletes, poor hiring decisions at every level of the athletics department, a failure to innovate, a failure to secure resources and wisely allocate them....
I think that about sums it up. What I've seen in the past year or so, though, is encouraging. I think we've got some good people in place but they will face significant inertia to get this ball rolling.

Not the on-campus Klan rallies?
People continue to act as if this were some Ole Miss sponsored event, as if the Chancellor and ASB President invited them on campus and distributed flyers and stuff.
Ole Miss respects the freedom of speech. That means that, even if you're a stupider-than-dogshit, crazy, poor, redneck piece of garbage that wants to spew verbal diarrhea all over anyone within earshot, you've got your right to do that on the Ole Miss campus. They came to our campus to protest Ole Miss, not to SUPPORT Ole Miss, and we allowed them to do that because that's the type of thing you do in a free society.

normally recoil at efforts to force college and pro teams into hiring black coaches, like the Rooney Rule in the NFL, because I think it should be based strictly on merit. That said, in the case of Ole Miss, I think it would do them a lot of good to find a qualified black coach if Hugh Freeze doesn't work out. I think racial history is third or fourth on the list of why they struggle athletically. It's significant enough however to make a bold move like that.
Seems like another university in MS thought that way a while back?

They were talking about Raheem Lockhart if I remember that correctly and when he got on campus it was the exact opposite he was worshiped.
Yeah true but the point remains that these PERCEPTIONS are very real and do influence the way people think about Ole Miss.

As much as you want it to be about race it is not. It's incompetence as evidenced by the other OM fans in this thread.
Dude, the Klan was involved. Yes, race was an issue. It's ALWAYS an issue when the Klan is involved.

There's no evidence that race has affected our fortunes half as much as any of the factors I listed in front of it.
The race issue has prevented top african american players from signing with Ole Miss for the last 40 years. They might get one every now and then, but it's never their top choice. A big part of that is the history of Ole Miss.

I never claimed it was not an issue. I stated that it was overblown. That is all.

We have signed the top african american players from this state for the last five years. It has more to do with our failures than the percieved racial overtones.

When is the last time a highly rated recruit has come out and said that OM was racist and he would not even consider it?
Well c'mon, is that the kind of thing people say publicly or in polite society?
If you don't think that Dan Mullen is, right now, talking to some kid about how he'll be more "comfortable" at Mississippi State over Ole Miss and how Mississippi State has a history of tolerance (which is complete bullshite but, again, they don't have a bad public perception to fight), then you're fooling yourself.

You're too caught up in right now. What about the 1970's and 80's? Think about that? Now don't you think spending two decades getting the shite beat out of you by Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee every season is going to set you back a bit?
