"and he said, well, how many times has your team won back to back titles"

Alabama says 4....

How about LSU.....

While you have a good point, many of those coaches did not have the benefit of modern medicine. While all were driven, very few of those coaches consider coaching a hobby and totally enjoy all aspects of it.

There is no way you can pigeon hole Coach Saban, many people thought the game had past Coach Bryant, and that was 1970....and everybody realizes what happened after that.

Paterno had outside issues
Hayes let his temper get him fired
Spurrier did not like to recruit
Brown has the Texas alumni to deal with
etc

Flip side-Snyder built KSU up, twice

so there are outside influences that affect a coach. Alabama lost two games last year that they could have won, and played for two NC in the last 3. Alabama also had another top 3 recruiting class. Alabama also had a huge amount of injuries they had to deal with the last 3 years as well

I know you want Coach Saban to be on the downside coaching wise, but the evidence is not there.

Coach Saban will retire after he wins 2 more NC, and he is driven to do just that.

Name a single active coach who won a title in his first three years and then fell off the edge of a cliff.

History suggests Chiz was the outlier, not the norm.

While there are not many active coaches with a NC under there belt, there are many examples of one hit wonders in college football.

Lou Holtz
Les Miles
Vince Dooley
Many Miami coaches
Steve Spurrier
Lavell Edwards
etc.....

What were the 5-year average recruiting rankings that preceded those declines?

Saban has a full roster. He’s not declining until kids stop flocking to Tuscaloosa.

This may well be the case, but there's no reason to think he'll be able to do so while still winning at the same level he has thusfar.

There is evidence that he will though

1) top recruiting class
2) doing the same hours and working with the players at the same rate
3) he knows what it takes to win multiple titles, and how to deal with winning them or not winning them the next year.

And even the ones who can do it don’t after their late 60’s.

There is a reason why most people retire in the 60's, they want to. People who do not retire in their 60's have two reasons 1) they are not financially secure, 2) they enjoy what they are doing.

By the way, Coach Saban enjoys what he does.

Insightful OP. I think it’s a matter of “ losing the locker room” after a certain age and I think it’s universal across sports. Players have not only heard it all before, they have heard every iteration and parody of it before. It goes from being raw and authentic to being derivative and played out. I think that’s why Saban’s teams have choked in three straight big games and needed a miracle to save them before that with Georgia. Because they aren’t all in anymore- they go through the motions- because they already know what Saban is going to say and do . They’ve seen this movie before. So they’ll feast when they overmatch teams and lose against teams that aren’t at a talent deficit and are still hungry and fresh and on the upswing. It’s simple psychology .

Or it could be that Alabama had more injuries in the last three years to starters than the previous 9 years....

With any great coach or player, people tend to think the excellence will last forever, but father time is still undefeated.

Nothing last forever, but your statement about the coaches is like saying most people die before they reach 100. While your data is sound, it really is meaningless because there are too many variables. Some people do live to be 100+, you just do not know.

You really do not want to start going over the history of the game with Alabama football, a team that averages a NC every decade since 1920 (at least).

I have family that are LSU alumni and ex-football players. They know Coach Saban and go duck hunting with him. You are wrong.

But then you already know that

Only thing we do know is that Coach Saban's retirement is one year closer.
