someone in Saban's close orbit should take over

I would tend to agree, but playing devil's advocate, you could also end up with a Billy Napier situation (who I actually like).

I think we've shied away from the nepotism route as a direct result of Saban coming in and abolishing that system at Alabama, so for better or worse it probably wasn't happening this time.

In my very uneducated opinion, I really don't think we know what the current culture even is yet, and thus it's hard to navigate by most anyone. Just expanding on that, I'm also not sure anyone on Saban's staff (by virtue of them being hired by him) would've necessarily been adept at navigating this new NIL era either.

Kirby is the only one that's come even close to replicating what Saban did. One assistant over what, 40 years?

I suspect most aren’t.

I mean no one is going to replicate Saban, but as directly contrasted to Napier, there's Smart, Kiffin, Sarkisian, Fisher, Cristobal, Lanning, Cignetti, Key, etc.

Any of which may have worked or may have failed spectacularly, but you have to consider them in the context of Alabama (and its resources) and not Indiana, for example.

By the way, I would've thought Napier would've succeeded here, but it seems I'm slowly being proven wrong.

I still wish we had gone for Kiffen. I really want to know what he did to make the powers that be that angry at him.

I know a guy who graduated recently from Auburn that never got to experience a winning record the entire time he was enrolled.

I do know, but hey, if things keep going in the current direction, you never know.

That was far removed from the first dynasty. Today's bandwagon and younger fans don't know anything else

The longest any Alabama fan under the age of 60 has gone between national titles is 16 years.

The years between Alabama’s national titles since Bryant’s first in 61: 2 years, 7 years, 4 years, 11 years, 16 years, 1 year, 2 years, 1 year, 2 years, 4 years and counting.

So two things.

One, Alabama fans have been spoiled the last 20 years.

Two, Bryant had a seven year drought between his third and fourth titles. The drought between his last and Alabama’s next wasn’t much longer at 11 years. And it was almost much shorter. In 1989 Bill Curry’s 10-0 #2 Alabama team lost the Iron Bowl to #11 Auburn 20-30 which cost them a chance at another national title.

That is awesome news. Maybe enough Alabama fans will be done with football that season tickets become a reality again for me like back during the mid 90s to mid 2000s.

That was a long stretch, and then Saban came along and dropped six more in the same span.

Sounds like his future trajectory as a fan is much better than alabama’s.
