per rule book: It defines targeting as follows (rule 9, article 3): ``No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.’’ Article 4 goes on to add: "No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul."

He clearly was not hit with the crown of his helmet. He lead with a shoulder. The fact that the helmets hit is irrelevant as he was not leading or targeting with his helmet.

Was he defenseless? That is usually reserved for a receiver or punt/kick returner ready to catch a ball...or a QB in mid or post throwing position who can NOT protect themselves.

He is not a receiver getting ready to catch a ball or a kickoff or punt. He isn't even post 1 second from throwing the ball...the return by the offense (Alabama) was in play and AM was a defender.

It was a fantastic game and there were some shite calls both ways. I sure didn't see the tip on the PI later in the game.

I will pull for Bama against Notre Dame fo sho. But I am baffled by how many Bama fans really seem to believe that was a legal hit. Unreal

I hope that POS is suspended for the national championship game. That was awful! Wake up Alabama fans, and show some class, if that is possible of you. It was a dirty hit.

I'm tired of the pussification of football. I see nothing wrong whatsover with Dial's hit, or any other so-called "targeting" or the extremely lame call where a guy slaps the QBs helmet while pass rushing. That's WHY they wear helmets.

You want to dramatically cut down on people leading with the head? Remove the helmets. Let them play with full gear minus helmets, and you'll see a huge drop off in head to head hits.

Jesus Christ...its football, and they have protective gear.

People complain bc shite like is called on other teams. It's the inconsistency more than the hit.

You can change your Georgia logo to an ND one now, maybe they can do what Lsu couldn't.

Didn't hear any LSU fan saying Mathieu should be ejected when he lit up Kirkpatrick last year.
