Increase the field to 16. Problem solved.

Just for fun... when was the last time the gators won a conference championship?

Would UGA or Texas have played starters in the SECCG if it was a 16 team field?

I say no. We saw how Beck got injured playing in the SECCG. I don't think that risk is worth it for teams without a bye being on the line. I don't think either team plays their starters to fight for a #2 seed vs a #3-#5 seed, hosting a first round game either way win or lose.

in a sport that matters? A long time

In a UAA / OP approved fig sport like underwater basket weaving?

All the time

I do. Seeding still matters, and winning the conference championship would have a real impact on that.

Plus, the SEC Championship is fricking worth it. Always.

It doesn't matter much to be honest. Not as much as losing a starter.

You're talking about UGA or Texas playing SC as the #2 seed, Ole Miss as the #3 seed or ASU as the #5 seed.

No offense, I'd probably take being seeded #5 over being seeded #2 if you gave me those options before the playoff.

Texas got an easier draw than Georgia

What NFL team in the history of the NFL would rather not have a bye? Patrick Mahomes was out there playing his nuts off last Sunday so the Chiefs could get a bye.

16 is too many. Keep it at 12, get rid of the Championship games, award the byes on current rating.

And maybe let Bama play an extra game so they feel included.

By doing this, you kill the CCG's.

Why would UGA or Texas want to play in the SECCG without a bye?

Both would be in the playoff if they opt out. Playing an extra game in the CCG would just give them injuries that those who didn't make the CCG wouldn't have.

Obviously I wasn't in the room when these decisions were made, but I'm also thinking that this is exactly what's going on here and why things are the way they are.

16 million people watched the SECCG, even though both teams already were gauranteed to be in the playoffs. Conference championship games are a $$$ cow.
