In Danielson’s opinion, Tennessee was a soft team under Butch Jones. Given that fact that Pruitt’s harshest critics point to the fact he may be too tough, his “flaw” would appear to be the perfect solution for what Tennessee needs at the moment. (Danielson’s quotes come via Rocky Top Insider)

“I think he’s the perfect guy for what Tennessee needs,” Danielson said on the radio program. “They were soft. Their practices were hard to watch. There was too much emphasis on tricking people.

“(Tennessee AD) Phil Fulmer knew it. There was no accountability at being tough at the point of attack.”

That could be considered a veiled shot at Butch Jones, but either way, the truth is the Volunteers struggled to defend the run and gain tough yards on the ground when it mattered the most for the vast majority of the previous five seasons. According to the CBS analyst, much of that had to do with the fact Tennessee tried to get too creative in order to come up with big plays.

“It was all, ‘How do we trick them?’ That’s a very dangerous thing for a football team,” Danielson continued. “‘Coach, find me a blitz or a play where we can trick the other team, for success for us.’”

While Danielson appears to have heard the same criticisms that Murray and Pollack have issued, possibly from them as Murray also works for CBS, the SEC on CBS analyst doesn’t seem to think those concerns are valid. In fact, Danielson said Pruitt is the “perfect guy” for the Tennessee job at the moment.

“I didn’t see that accountability at Tennessee,” Danielson concluded. “And I think that Jeremy is the perfect guy for it. And I’ve heard the criticism. Too bad. They’re soft. They need to get tougher.”

So perfect they accepted rejections from 7 other people before hiring him.

On a serious note, the dude is a lights out DC. UT will undoubtedly have a very good defense and very soon. I'm curious abotu his abilities to put an offense together and the THE guy to build a program though.

Not saying Pruitt is going to turn out like saban....but bama had struggles in their coaching hire before saban. So this comment is kind of ignorant.

How many people publicly rejected bama before they took saban? And you realize saban had HC experience at 4 places including the NFL and a national title before he got to bama? Your comment is ignorant.

you are pretty stupid if you skipped over the first part of my comment. I understand it's not one for one. Just like the "public commenting" then is different than the way it is today.

The point for the retard is...your original point is stupid as it acts like landing on the 2nd,3rd....10th coach to accept it doesnt matter if the coach turns out to work out. UT got it's first want in jones, and we all see how that went. If Pruitt happens to bring UT back, not saying he will or not, it wont matter how many people "publicly rejected" UT.

Some may cringe when Danielson speaks, but he is not close to being a moron. He may not be right about JP being the man, though I think it's a good possibility, but UT definitely needs to be tougher.

Could be? I wouldn't even say this is veiled.

Danielson is correct on the necessity
for Tennessee to toughen-up---but as to
whether Pruitt has the ability to put
together and run the complete program as
a HC---especially with a meddling Phat Phil
looming over him----Danielson doesn't know
any more than the next a-hole.
