I would assume they were accommodating a track for athletics.
Perhaps not, though.

A lot of college stadiums had the horseshoe designs back then to accommodate the track. This rebuild will actually finally get rid of the last of that old stadium. The first deck on the East and West sides are still the same basically as they were back then which is obviously a real problem because the infrastructure for those decks is also from the '20s and limits what can be done on the 2nd and 3rd decks. While the West Deck will be completely torn down, the Top 2 East Decks will not as they are structurally independent of each other and it is all just bench student seating. All the facilities and of course the 1st Deck will be redone with luxury stuff added in.

there has always been a track there. In fact you can see it in the picture. It's why many old stadiums are build like that actually. Track was a pretty big deal.

Right. I always figured the surface the Corps of Cadets marches in on was a remnant of that track.
It still is, in my opinion. A&M needs to upgrade the outdoor facility badly. Pat Henry and our athletes deserve it. Hopefully the SEC $$$ will make it happen.

Yeah, that's exactly how it went down

Nearly everyone had a horseshoe stadium at some point. Here is Tiger Stadium in 1953:

It just seems that AtMs horseshoe seems more arching than all others.

I've always liked the Colosseum look at Tiger Stadium.

This made my eyes bleed.

Ok I take back my horseshoe comment.
But I believe the first mistake was the initial design on the sideline upper decks.
But the bigger mistake is the zone. poorly designed in my opinion. Take that designer and kick him in the nuts.

Wow, forgot how tiny the old jumbotron was.
That looks to be the OU game in 2000. I can see where I was sitting!

Very similar design:

Very similar design:
I sat in the last row of the zone for JFF's 3 interception performance that was certainly Heisman-esque and I sat in the last row of BDS for Game of the Century, Part I.
The Zone is way further back and higher.

Wasn't A&M's zone pretty much just ripping off Florida's and Bama's? Or did Bama's come later?
