Not necessarily. When you have a relative piss ant sized fanbase like Ole Miss, you can hide the redneck element easier because you probably don't have any sidewalk fans. The number of alumni at a school is rather finite compared to the general population of fans. Therefore the major sports programs have many more bandwagon/sidewalk fans from all over a particular region.
Alabama football, like the NY Yankees, LA Lakers, etc has a much bigger bandwagon fanbase as opposed to say the Florida Marlins or Memphis Grizzlies.
