They arbitrarily pick the same top 10-15 every time. Then they look at the wealthiest public engineering and private liberal arts schools. The rest are put in a raffle drum and rotated several times.

They must’ve forgot Auburn. I’m sure it was just an oversight.

Each of these rankings have varying criteria that are an advantage for certain schools, and not for others. What was the Forbes criteria?
For the last several years, UA has dropped a bit in the USNWR rankings despite increasingly attracting more top students (ACT of 33 or higher) than Vandy, UF, UGA, AU, and all other SEC schools except Texas A and M. I base this on the size of each school's freshman class and the top 25 per percentile ACT/SAT score at each school. UA primarily uses the ACT by the way. So I take these rankings with a grain of salt. Until UA does well in them of course. lol
USNWR gives huge weight to peer rating. I think that puts Southern schools like UA with particular historical baggage at a disadvantage. UA also needs to improve its six year graduation rate, which might be lower than other SEC schools cause of the huge percentage of out of state students, but more likely due to the large number of low quality students the admin. still lets in. UA's student quality has a very wide range. Its fifty percentile is 23 to 32! The lower end students are weighing the stats down.
Surprised to see LSU do so well in the Forbes rankings given their budgetary problems and performance in other rankings.

MSU just had a record freshman class, in fact, it was the largest freshman class in the state. Forbes is proving to be more rag than drape.

It’s actually pretty depressing to see our academic decay in black and white.

Would not mind if we dropped just to get more football wins.
But shhhh don’t tell anyone that

You can get all the education you want at any SEC school....and a helluva lot more than most can stand.

Those rankings are so fraudulent. A few years ago Bama was Forbes' number 7 or 8 ranked public institution, right behind Michigan. Now they are 221 overall, what a joke. Which one is it Forbes?

Hmm. Forbes get more and more click-baity every year. I'm sure they think their rankings make sense, but just looking at the criteria, it's even less useful than the metrics for USN&WR as a measure of educational quality. Nobody should feel either proud or ashamed by their ranking here.
In case anyone wants to argue that the bit about post-graduate income is meaningful, people do tend to stay in their regions in the long run, so making X dollars in NYC can correspond to a much lower salary in, say, Jackson, Mississippi. Cost of living adjustments do matter. The fact that Forbes completely overlooks this should tell you how big a grain of salt you should take with these rankings.

While it’s nice that UF is #2, the degree you earn usually matters more than where you earn a degree. An engineering grad from MSU will probably earn more over their career than a social science grad from UF.

We have numerous engineering/cs grads mostly from Alabama, Auburn several from MSU. No one makes a distinction when hiring. Even a Georgia Tech grad doesn't have a leg up. Frankly, don't care if you are from Harvard. Many gov't entities care but most businesses do not. In fact, a doctorate doesn't help here (large corp). Grades don't matter a lot, just so they are decent. Occasionally MBAs help a little. The primary issues are, "what can you do, what kind of co-worker are you, what kind of worker".

Fine to talk about academics anytime. Education should always be a good thing.

Do you even have to graduate high school to get into State?
