Wow, Texas is really defying the narrative for Universities everywhere which typically only want mediocre students and professors.

And given this definitiion:
quote:
The term Ivy League has connotations of academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism.
Yep, totally fits the bill of UGA, Texas, Florida, A&M, etc. Particularly that latter descriptor...

Teasip arrogance knows no bounds. Trust us.
We stopped doing business with them for a reason. They're a cancer.

quote:UGA is a great liberal arts school. Aren't the Peabody awards from UGA? You all churn out lots of journalists as well, and having CNN nearby is something no other school can rival. For as much as people shite on Atlanta here, it really is a great asset. It's got a great economy for new grads. Not many other SEC schools have a city with opportunities that robust nearby.
What hurts is the lack of a med school. For a while it looked like we were going to have both Med and Engineering to add to our list but Augusta killed that. I think UGA still has enough to warrant inclusion but as that link indicated, admission into the group comes off as a rather arbitrary process.
But just looking on what has helped UF in recent years, it's really been due to progresses with medical and engineering research. It brings way more money than the liberal arts. So if you guys get that set up and can compete with Georgia Tech and continue to brand yourself as the best all-around university experience in GA, the money and research prestige will just flow in.

Yes.
I don't think any other college holds anything this distinctive.

Jealousy knows no bounds
What is funny though is the fact that the clown college in Lubbock is trying to become an AAU university
If that ever happens then the UGA posters may be right that it is nothing to brag about

Why shouldn't UT
They are considered one of the most powerful public universities in academics and if you combine the athletic program than only one public university could say more and that is UCLA
That will soon change due to the big upcoming shift in Confetence realignment

Um, actually Florida, Virginia, and UNC could all say more (given the sorry state of Texas football, especially so). If not for the lack of AAU status, UGA could lay claim as well.

Probably fair to assume at this point in the thread that we are only talking about public universities. Otherwise Stanford would have this thing on lock

UT has the third most combined national championships in college sports

Which is well and good if you want to look at it from a historic perspective. But unless we've decided to start talking about which Universities have been great in the past, it doesn't change the fact that, currently, there are a lot of Universities that are on par, if not better than what Texas has to offer. That isn't meant to diminish what Texas has done and continues to do but it does acknowledge that the landscape has changed in a pretty big way so that Texas isn't the supposed king of the hill when it comes to public universities.
Hell, I didn't even mention Michigan or Ohio State in my initial list.

Iowa State has AAU status. So does Buffalo, Arizona, KANSAS, Missouri, Michigan State and Purdue (among others).... Tell me why these schools are considered "prestigious" when UGA, Miami, Notre Dame, etc aren't members.

Wait, Notre Dame isn't in this supposedly prestigious organization but Iowa State and Kansas are?

Honestly, no one cares where your degree comes from after being in the workforce for a little bit and some experience. One giant public university becomes interchangeable with another.

That is so far from the actually truth it is hilarious.
The fact is that UT's strength is growing due to the increases in population and GDP for the state of Texas.
If and only if UT's strength decreases then who do you think would benefit. That is right A&M. They have already shown to be quite capable in sports besides football in the SEC just imagine if the true support of Texans switch universities.
This was their plan but it has not worked and it will not because A&M alienated themselves from the state of Texas by leaving.
Why do you think that the SEC let A&M in because it brought Texas without having to face UT.
UT in all sports would have dominated even more than UF does.
