Was great listening to Hawthorne making a big call but damn he was negative, I listened to the Anthony Jennings TD drive vs. Arkansas the other day and he says something to the effect of “LSU needs to have a lot go right and LSU hasn’t done any of that today.” Damn Jim what about the insane one-handed catches by Jarvis Landry?

But i hated listening to him call a game. he had some great individual calls, but sometimes he would get so lost in emotion over a game I couldn't tell what was happening.

Never got to hear him call one live, but listening to the clips he sounds like a passionate fan with his dream job honestly.
Like having your grandpa do play by play lol. I can see why so many would enjoy it as a fan of the team. You don't need to hear your local guy pumping up the opponent.
Hawthorne was the only voice I knew growing up so of course I loved his calls even though he would also get so excited he would forget that Jack Hunt was a white Safety not a Black WR. It's those things that kind of endeared themselves to the fanbase over time.

“Dawgs ball on the State 22! State stacked up there in that 6-2 that’s been givin the Dawgs fits all ...day ...long!”
He had some of the best descriptions of the most mundane moments like above. He would almost shout the second “State” in the above and then emphasize and draw out “out day long” A simple sentence to describe a 2nd and 8 in a 13-10 game midway through the 3rd quarter. He was a one of kind.

I could always tell how LSU was doing if I turned in late for some reason just by Hawthorne's tone.
He had a habit of going forever without update time remaining or score but it didn't matter his voice was enough information.

I’m was too young to remember but sometimes I wish I only had a radio and no tv just to hear Larry Munson call a Dawg Game one more time

Hey. He's not my cup of tea. If you liked him great.
If I am listening on the radio I like to know what is going on.
Like I said, he had some great individual calls, but as a whole I didn't care for his style. If you don't like it, then....tough.

Munson was probably GOAT!

Regarding the enmity against Tenn, Munson originally came from Nashville (Vandy area), so he was use to a powerful Tennessee team, and he carried that for the rest of his life.

"Run Lindsey" is what I'll always remember.
This pisses me off. It's why the SEC should expand to a 9 game schedule and abolish the divisions. Each program can have 3 or 4 permanent opponents but the rest are rotated. Teams with the two best records play for the title. Create tie breakers if necessary.

Wow him calling Georgia games then Falcon games the next day.I mean some of those Dawg games were on the road at night the turn around and call a Falcon game the next day that could be on the west coast because they used to be in the old NFC West with the 49ers & Rams. What a devoted homer announcer he was. Loved his voice along with the John Ward's Jack Crystal's Jim Hawthornes & Jim Fyffe of the world.

quote:I know it’s hard to remember but Tennessee was an elite program that owned us through the 90s and we had a new coach and pulled off a huge upset with over an elite program on the road with a freshman QB. We were an afterthought to UT fans at the time but we hated losing to them
b) RE: his famous "hobnail boot," why did he have such animus against Tennessee?? Yall hardly ever played each other before realignment in 1992. I've never seen this series this called a rivalry. When I lived in Tennessee, they all talked about Florida or Bama.
