Portis was more talented at this juncture. Gafford's feet under the goal are terrible.

You think throwing alley oops down and put back dunks equals "talent"? His inside game needs a ton of work and he's a shaq level free throw shooter.
Bob was already going back to the basket and squaring face up as a Freshman, Gafford isn't close to that level offensively.
He's got way more potential, no one is denying that.
We'll see how it finishes up but Portis averaged more rebounds per game at this juncture as well.
