I remember when this dumb shite started less than 5 years ago the big concern from coaches was that a competitive roster would cost $15M lmao

I would be surprised if that’s accurate. I don’t know how UGA could retain its team at that number.

My guess is the cost of retention is consistently underestimated.

It doesn't surprise me. Every team gets conference money, gate money, logo money. As far as I know, UGA doesn't have any billionaires who are all-in on contributions. Our crowd funding efforts have been lackluster. We haven't been aggressive about corporate sponsorships. We give away a home game every two years to Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech got paid $10 million to play UGA at Mercedes Benz, which is more than UGA gets paid to play Florida in Florida. Auburn took a big paycheck ($6 M plus a portion of gate, from what I can tell most of it went directly to their players as an NIL deal) to play the Baylor game in Atlanta. Georgia's fan base is so enamored with tradition that the concept of changing the way we operate is routinely rejected out of hand, at least by the folks on message boards. Maybe attitudes (probably not those of the OP) will change when teams with more money start routinely pillaging our roster and results on the field suffer. Until then, I can't see any reason why UGA would be near the top of the list.

Rusty and those types always like to say that other schools have to outbid UGA by 3x to win the battle due to development pitch and results...take with a grain of salt of course

Yeah, I don’t believe that degree of discount is accurate. There’s no way we could keep Nate Frazier for $500k if OSU is offering $1.5M, for example. I could see UGA pushing that narrative as PR. I could also see UGA pushing the “poor us” narrative to help fundraising. A lot of schools do that.

I don’t think UGA is a top spender, but I would think they’d be closer to at least Alabama on the chart just based on roster quality.

It's entirely consistent with the philosophy of our administration which is more focused on academics and profitability. UGA has less income that many comparable universities but our admins spend wisely which makes Georgia one of the most profitable universities.
As such, we spend our money on retaining the players Kirby has recruited and much less on going after expensive players in the portal.

Be that as it may, there's only one word in your post that explains Georgia football's current success rate. The word is "Kirby". He's the singular reason why UGA has maintained a high quality roster without being extremely aggressive at fund raising. When he leaves, hopefully not before, that advantage goes away. So when you see folks on this message board blaming this or that undesired outcome on Kirby, directly or by insinuation, you know they're either a fool or a troll.

Georgia appears to be getting a good return on investment.

A top 10-12 payroll with the number 1 coach should equal a national title around every 5 years.

Before all of this NIL shite, the ratio was better.

I think you will see these budgets quickly drop as schools that haven't done anything in a while learn that Indiana just had a lot of things go their way and that most programs donors will tire quickly of the nil scam.

I think we'd have a top 5 payroll if 1980 was still a thing and without the 2021 and 2022 national titles.

Wouldn't say there's apathy from our boosters. They're just not as hungry as they would be without the back to backs.

I think we are saying the same thing. We have just come to the realization sooner than some other teams that nil is untenable.

There's zero chance it's accurate yet we get one of these bullshite NIL "estimate" articles at least once a month.

This is why you see Oregon Texas and Miami and those teams at the top aside from the fact they DO have massive donors. Their donors are also very very desperate to get a title. Really hoping the culture at uga will prevail over just throwing millions at talent
