I think you are grossly underestimating CEH's usage this upcoming season on 3rd down & obvious passing situations.

I guess a lot of that depends on how good our new guys are as 3rd down backs. I know CEH has the experience and that is noted, but we've had freshmen capable of filling that role in the past. Take Guice, for instance. He would have been an incredible back in this system with his ability to catch balls out of the backfield.

Probable won't see significant action until the ladder part of the season.

That would be surprising imo. He will be over 12 months removed from his injury when the season starts. ACLs don't take that long anymore.

No doubt a talent like him would be successful in this system but even a freshman a talented Guice would have his issues in pass pro. This is something that comes from excelling in the film room & relaying that onto the practice field then into actual live gameday action. It's something that takes time especially from the jump from high school to college. Once Emery gets it, he will be a nightmare weapon for opposing defenses but at this moment & at the start of the season, CEH's experience will heavily favor him in those situations.

I'm just sometimes a little concerned about CEH's size when it comes to pass protection. Pound for pound he's strong as shite, but will he be able to have the leverage to block linebackers and edge rushers much bigger than he is?

Another aspect that is being overlooked is that the Saints are big on self scouting & not being predictable.

It's easy to say, just let Emery work running down & distance situations but that leads to tipping your hand as a play caller. It's something LSU has been horrible with for well over 10 years.

If Joe Brady is any reflection of Payton as a game planner & play caller, this will be a huge aspect of the Tiger's philosophy this upcoming season which is another why I expect CEH to be heavily involved in the offense early on. That definitely can/will change as the season progresses & Emery learns the offense & his responsibilities.

Just think of Pierre Thomas. CEH just has to understand where his picks up are & take their legs out. If he is late to react then he is in trouble but that's the case with any back.

quote:

Ability to Pick Up Blitzes

When facing an offensive juggernaut like New Orleans, a natural response from many defensive coordinators is to center their game plan on the pass rush.

With a sometimes shaky offensive line in front of him, Brees often requires solid pass protection from his running backs in order to stay upright. Pierre Thomas possesses adequate skills as a blocker, and if all else fails to slow down the pass rush, Thomas can execute the screen play as well as any back in the league.

When the Saints successfully pick up the blitz, the results are usually not desirable for the defense, as Brees often looks downfield for the home run. When the threat of the deep ball is as real as it is in Payton's offense, defenses are naturally less enthusiastic about sending extra pass-rushers.

Darren Sproles who is smaller than Thomas also held his own in pass pro.

Did I knock him anywhere in my post?
We have 2 great HS backs coming in and we need the boost at RB to open up the passing game/keep the defense honest.
Between Curry/Emery/Davis I don’t see CEH being our premier back no matter where he went to high school.
