One theory is that "Yankee" was actually an insult that originated as an insult to the Dutch in New York "John Cheese". The Dutch then turned it around and started calling other New Yorkers "Yahn Kees" which is Dutch for John Cheese. The term eventually grew to be used for anyone from New York, then anyone from the Northeast. It eventually grew to include anyone North of the Mason-Dixon line from a state that supported the Union in the Civil War.

So, by the evolution of the term...If someone yells "O-H", and you yell out "I-O"...you are a Yankee.
