The SEC was down that year. As I've been saying through the thread.

Also, Auburn and USC played the same number of ranked teams in the regular season. SEC championship is what gave Auburn the leg up. Why count the bowls either? They all were obviously going to be playing ranked teams and well the decision on the two best was already made.

Nobody else deserves it. USC played in and won the National Championship game. It would look completely retarded handing out the BCS championship to a team that did not even play in the game.

Ironic

10-9 with the refs giving the Aubies a "second" try at the extra point.....It was a failure all the way around

I remember the game. LSU should have been able to score more than nine though, so I don't bother blaming the refs. Still was a quality win for Auburn that year.

USC should keep the national championship. They were far and away the best team in CFB.

Really? They almost lost to 4-7 Stanford, 6-6 UCLA who lost to Wyoming in their bowl game, OSU, & Cal. Damn that's impressive.

Why would you blame the refs? It was the correct call. Jumping over the center was illegal that year and LSU broke the rule. It may have been a dumb rule, but it was the correct call.

That USC team was one of the best not only in 2004, but of all time, no one can say otherwise.

how do award someone a trophy for a game that they did not play in? The BCS championship trophy is the only NC that USC lost. I think the AP said they would not strip USC's 2004 title from them. Unless the AP changes their mind then I don't think there is anything to be "awarded."

neva been called before or since just saying....game in Auburn, we all know what the deal was...Im not blaming refs really, just saying that win was very questionable and not some "great" win by any means

How do you award someone a national championship when they lose their last game of the year?

You don't.

Please tell me when the loser of the BCS national championship game is awarded the national championship?

Maybe, maybe not, but the only thing you can do is go back and watch the play. The guy jumped over the center. Jumping over the center was illegal that year in college football.(not sure if it still is) Therefore it was the correct call.

Ask the people that awarded it. BCS didn't exist then. Seriously, does Auburn think they should get the BCS trophy?

I think AU deserves the trophy about as much as I think bama deserves about 4 of theirs.

It was a bama fan I was replying to. Bama claims a few national titles in years they lost their bowl game.

Oh I'm with you now. The AP was stupid and awarded titles before bowls games until sometime in the 1960s or early 70s I think.

Though I do find it funny they claim a national title for the same year that Mississippi State last won the SEC (1941).

Yea 1941 was a joke.

I don't blame them for claiming them because they were awarded to them. I just think it's funny that bama fans will be the first to stand up and say AU has no right to claim 2004 when AU actually won all their games that year. To me a team that actually wins all their game, in the toughest conference in the nation, has more of a right to call themselves a champion than a team that ended their season by losing.

I don't care whether Auburn claims a title (they already claim the People's Championship from the Opelika newspaper I think) for 2004. My point was the BCS championship is only thing that has been vacated. USC is still the AP champion for that year until the AP does something - which they said they won't. Unless Auburn wants to argue that they should be the BCS champion and receive the crystal ball for a game that they weren't invited to then Tubbs needs to shut up and stay in Lubbuck.

Polls aside, who do you think is more deserving to be called a champion: a team that wins all of their games, or a team that loses their last one?
