Muschamp was already in a situation like that at Texas and it didn't work out (had to wait quite a while).
How was Muschamp to know that Spurrier would bolt midseason?
By the way, you're wrong that Muschamp would have been head coach in waiting:

Well with Spurrier retiring he would have been in good position regardless.
