Sure, but what we are discussing is a punt returner trying to catch a punt, then acting like he had done so without a fair catch being involved.

Fair catch or not, it was an illegal and malicious hit that warranted an ejection. Good call by the refs

To signal fair catch the receiver must raise one arm fully above his head and wave it side to side, while the ball is in flight.

The refs didn't consider it to be a fair catch, if they did the result of the play would have been a ten yard penalty at the spot of the foul.

that's about as intentional of a malicious hit as they come. he deserves whatever suspension comes his way.
