Lewis Grizzard was a great newspaper columnist/humorist. He was a huge georgia fan, and wrote a story about a football game against Georgia and South carolina. Georgia had a player with the last name of Dicks, who was injured and would not play in the game....hence, the title.

He did not write only about georgia, but was really a fun read. He also wrote a bunch of books that would be entertaining to read.

Kathy Sue Loudermilk, I Love You
A Good Beer Joint Is Hard to Find and Other Facts of Life
Won't You Come Home, Billy Bob Bailey?: An Assortment of Home-Cooked Journalism for People Who Wonder Why Clean Underwear Doesn't Grow on Trees
They Tore Out My Heart and Stomped That Sucker Flat
Elvis Is Dead and I Don't Feel So Good Myself
Shoot Low Boys - They're Riding Shetland Ponies
My Daddy Was a Pistol and I'm a Son of a Gun

These are just a few examples of his books. His style reminded me a bit of Paul harvey, for some reason. just good folksey humor.

Unfortunately he died way too young.

ETA
I saw where another Georgia fan said it didn't really happen. I do remember him writing about it or telling it.

Here is a link to some YouTube videos of him. Not sure if he translates well in sound. I was only used to reading his column and books.

Lewis was a Southern Treasure. Last of his kind I'm afraid.

Lewis Grizzard is an American treasure, especially to a true son of the South!

Ok it’s a Lewis Grizzard story. Read a couple of his books years ago. He was a great writer. Just never heard of this story.

I apologize to Jimdog for thinking he was shitefaced

I would have rather you allow me to labor on in ignorance confident that ole Louis slipped one by a drunken editor. Happy Dicks, a true all time All SEC name for the ages is a friend of my delivery doc friend here in Cols (Ole Hap is a delivery doc himself). And of course Doctor Dicks perpetrates the rumor. And I prefer to continue believing it to the extent that I repeat it along.

Great story and Lewis never shied away from it.

Dicks actually played in the game and had 9 tackles.
