In assessing Ole Miss' talent, here was part of his response:

quote:

"They had some NFL talent last year and it looks like they have NFL talent this year," Mullen said. "Coach Orgeron did a great job recruiting for Coach Nutt. That's what he does. He's done that everywhere he's been."

Mullen is probably thinking; "I left Gainesville for The frickin' Egg Bowl? What was I thinking?"

In all reality, Mullen's comment about Ole Miss' talent is head on. Orgeron couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag but he could recruit as good as anybody. He got the core of the past 2 Houston Nutt teams to Oxford. Nutt has won with Orgeron's talent while Mullen inherited Crooms mess. However if Mullen continues to recruit well he will have Mississippi State as a very competitive program.

This years Egg Bowl will be closer than the experts predict.

I was being sarcastic referring to all of our resident TD prognosticators.

The "experts" think it will be a 7 point game. If you are so confident, bet your house on it

More Egg Bowl Week Quotes from Mullen

quote:

You'll remember yesterday, when Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt told reporters in Oxford like our David Brandt that eight recruits didn't make a visit to Oxford last weekend because of the Ku Klux Klan's visit to campus. David wrote that Nutt was obviously ticked at the decisions and said other schools were trying to scare recruits with it. "Without a doubt," Nutt said. "And that’s fine. It’s not going to help them. This is one program in the state that’s getting very strong." One program getting strong? I would figure that Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen might take exception to that, so I posed a question in today's news conference to see how he would respond to it. "I think we're doing some good things," Mullen said. "We don't negative recruit. You come to our game day and you see the atmosphere, the family atmopshere we have here on game days, great sense of community with our fans and those things. Plus the exciting games — sold out stadiums, loud, exciting football. We don't do a whole lot of negative recruiting. We have a whole lot of positives for us to sell to kids in our state to come play for their state university and play with a lot of other kids in Mississippi. We recruit Mississippi kids and do it in a very positive manner." Subtle jab? Try Mullen touting the "family atmopshere" and compare that to the Ku Klux Klan being on campus. There's your subtle jab.
