Oh yay, twist the stats is here.

What wins does Mullen have as a head coach over a top 10 team?

I think you need to look at it different. Considering the talent that Mullen has at State it wouldn't be fair to compare him to someone that has the top talent in the Nation. If you were to switch Mullens players with sabans players Mullen would win every time.

Considering the talent that Mullen has he should have never been able to beat the talent that Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Auburn, or even Tennessee has. The reason is because of coaching.

We've known this since he Chris Relfed OM right before their lackluster Cotton Bowl visit in 2009..

Twist the stats? Twisting the stats is what was done in the quoted post. I untwisted them.

Saban signature wins at Michigan State - Saban shite the bed losses at Michigan State = -1 Coach Effect.

Mullen signature wins at Mississippi State - Mullen shite the bed losses at Mississippi State = 0 Coach Effect.

Try to keep up...if you can.

Saban was doing that with a team coming off major violations. Mullen is just beating bad teams with a weak schedule at a shitty school. It's a ridiculous comparison.

A coach on the verge of being great should have at least one big win, one major upset over a top opponent in four years. Saban beat a number of really good teams when he was at Michigan State. He showed signs of being able to compete against the big boys. What is Dan Mullen's greatest win at Mississippi State? Beating an 8-5 Florida team in the swamp? I'm not impressed.

Dan Mullen had to deal with a team that in 08..

1. Lost to Louisiana Tech. 14–22
2. Had 0 offense and lost 2-3 vs Auburn
3. Finished the season 2-8 w/ losses to L. Tech, Auburn, G. Tech, LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama.
4. They finished the season off with a 0-45 loss to Ole Miss.

Not to mention having to follow Sylvester Croom as a H.C.

Mullen left everything to coach for MSU and now look at where they are.

He didn't beat two top ten teams in his first year in Oxford or anything. One of those teams didn't win the national championship or anything.

Saban had one true "signature" win in his 5 years against Ohio St. The rest of those "signature" wins came against overrated teams that lost at least 3-4 games. Those are still better wins than Mullen has had, no doubt. Also some much worse losses too. Fact is, Mullen hasn't had the blessing of seeing the "tweener" teams that Saban did in his time at Michigan State.

Saban inherited a program that had be 50-40-3 on the field the previous 8 years. Mullen inherited one that was 29-65 the previous 8 years.

I'm in no way saying that Mullen is, or ever will be, as good of coach as Nick Saban. But this "start of career" discussion is plentifully debatable and interesting.

The beginning of Spurrier's time at SC is also a good comparison(in a similarly difficult situation, albeit still easier than MSU)...

He was probably dyeing it when he was at Toledo.

ETA - Notice the crimson tie though.

He also lost to Wake Forest, Vandy, and South Carolina in that same season...

"Signature wins" as a heavy underdog are almost always followed by heartbreaking defeats. That = roller coaster ride of playing for "emotional" coaches. We experienced this CONSTANTLY for the first decade under Jackie Sherrill.

I'm not excusing the fact that Mullen hasn't found a way to win ANY of these games. We've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a bunch of them. LSU 09, Auburn and Arky 10, Auburn and USCe 11, etc...

Thing is...Mullen is consistent. He beats teams he should beat. I'm not saying that way is better or worse, but I prefer it after experiencing the other way with Sherrill...although I would have loved at least one of those "signature" games.

I think Mizzou owes Pinkel a few more years to adjust to the SEC. His W/L record since 2005:

2005 7-5
2006 8-5
2007 12-2
2008 10-4
2009 8-5
2010 10-3
2011 8-5

I don't think Mullen would go there even if they did fire Pinkel.
