What is the open container attitude on and off campus for gamedays? At AU, you can pretty much carry around as long as you dont act like a moron.

Is the campus and city open to tailgating anywhere? It is pretty much is a landrush on Friday afternoons in AU to get your spot. Is that similiar for College Station?

We are staying on East University. Any bars close enough to walk to and stumble back from? Preferrably an older crowd, alums, etc.

Looking forward to my first trip to Kyle Field Saturday!

CSB time...had my dad accepted the promotion he was offered when I was in HS, I'd probably be an Aggie today.

Same.

TAMU's campus is large; and much of it is open to tailgating. Most people congregate on west campus and main campus around Kyle Field. There is a growing contingent of folks who are tailgating on the east side, though.

All bars worth visiting are located on Northgate, which, as the name suggests, is located directly north of campus. Depending how far east you're set up, you'll be a half-mile to (maybe) a mile away.

First off, glad you are making the trip and I hope you have a great time!

From what I have seen and heard, A&M and Auburn are very similar culturally. Open containers are no big deal, I've walked into the MSC with a beer without issue. You have to go out of your way to be a jerk in order to get bad treatment.

The tailgating is very spread out at A&M and where you are at is not a prime area but there are plenty of folks out there as well, you shouldn't have any issues getting setup. The biggest tailgate area is Spence Park followed by the area around Reed Arena but tailgates are all over campus. You can expect Aggies to offer you food and beer, especially because so many reported friendly treatment at Auburn last year.

Northgate is the best bar area with The Dixie Chicken as the most famous but it is a bit of a walk from where you are. Not terrible but the campus is large. If you are on the East side though you will be right by the Bonfire Memorial which is somber but cool to check out if you have a chance, it gives you a feel for just how big it was and how important it was to A&M.

One thing I always recommend to first time visitors is to check out Step Off on the Quad with the Corps an hour and a half before the game. Best spot is by the cannon (a 1903 Howitzer) that fires off and then the Corps marches through campus toward the stadium behind the band. Gets me fired up for football every time.

Have a great time!

In terms of an "older crowd," The Bar at The Republic has some great scotches, ryes, & whiskeys (along with signature cocktails) if that's your thing. It's down at that end of University, next to the Hilton.

The bar at Veritas will do you right as well. It's a small space; but everything they muddle is fresh as the day is long.

Both locales may be a good "jumping off" places, before heading out for the evening.

Of course there are multiple restaurants with bars down on that end of University; but I wouldn't recommend limiting yourself to east University. Make your way down to Northgate (on the opposite end of University--across Texas Ave.--directly across from campus). The age thing won't be an issue, and you'll enjoy the local flavor down there. All are welcome--young idiots & old farts alike.

Very much looking forward to having y'all in town as well. Should you need anything, don't hesitate to ask anyone. If they don't know the answer, they'll find it for you.

Safe travels.

Are vehicles allowed on campus where ppl tailgate? We tend to hop curbs and then set up our spot next to our cars.

They are, but only if that's your designated (e.g., permit purchased) lot. Since y'all are visitors, I doubt you have reserved parking (unless you purchased it with your ticket, which is certainly doable). You're more than welcome to: pull up to wherever it is you decide to set-up shop; drop off your goods; then move your car to a legal parking spot. Since you'll probably be over on west campus, I'd recommend the West Campus Garage ($20/green locale in the center of the map, next to the Student Rec Center).

Then again, if you're going with folks who already have parking, you'll have no trouble driving to your tailgate spot.

I gotcha.

Can we set up on Fridays and leave tents there or do we have to wait til Saturday?

It looks like I may just be dragging all my shite from the hotel.

Buildings open for bathroom use?

You can set up shop beginning at noon the day before the game.

Port-a-cans everywhere; but depending on where you set up (on West Campus), you can also use the facilities inside of the Student Rec Center and/or Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

Again ... if you have any questions at all, stop & ask. Folks will fight over who's going to help you.

Tailgate on the grass at MSC. Best spot on campus.

EKG nailed it. Republic is the nicest upscale bar in town. Great wine selection also, and they have a steak tartare that will roll your eyes back in your head.

Veritas is basically a wine bar, with a very nice, Asian-inspired restaurant attached to it. (Get the beef carpacio). In the same grouping you will find Atami, which is a very nice sushi place with a good bar and nice selection of sakes.

If you want to venture a bit further from campus for a meal or drinks, I highly-recommend Christopher's World Grill. It is basically Nouvea American with a strong Italian influence. A bit pricy, and you will want reservations.

Madden's is also nice (and unique), but it is all the way up on Bryan (about 10 miles from campus). But if you go to Bryan, Downtown Uncorked is another nice wine bar and Murphy's Law is (oddly) pretty good German food in an Irish Pub atomosphere.

As to the tailgating on the west side of campus, folks set up as far away as the Veterinary School, which is quite a hike from Kyle. But the benefit is that you can find a nice big patch of grass, if you stake a spot a bit further from the stadium.

Guests may not camp out or loiter prior to 6 AM the day before the game.

So if I set up me stuff on Friday afternoon, I cannot hangout Friday evening at my spot?

NM...didnt read enough.

I honestly don't know, parkjas (that's [hangin' out at our tailgate spot on Fridays] not something I/my group has ever done). Maybe another Ag can answer that question? Typicaly, folks hang out on the town the day prior to the game. Now gameday is a whole other ball of string: They'll be there at the crack of dawn.

I forgot to mention that we have LOTS of good, family-owned Tex-Mex places here in town.

If your experience with Mexican food or Tex-Mex (very different concepts) is limited to what you can find in the Southeast, you definitely want to find one of these places while you are here. Whole different quantum from what you are accustomed to.

Also, if you want to see Aggies in full cult mode check out Midnight Yell Practice on Friday night. It won't be as big as it was in this video for Bama but there will likely be 25-30k there.

Don't plan on tailgating under any trees. There are none.

Never thought I would see a campus that would make Starkville look pretty. College Station gave me a new found appreciation for the MSU campus.

Campus is covered in trees.
And if you can score a spot underneath one, it isn't a bad place to set-up, since you'll get some shade outta the deal.
Of course, you'll also have some uninvited visitors (damn grackles).
