Arkansas football was an after thought in the 1930s.

This was before War Memorial Stadium was built in Little Rock, TVs didn't exist in the average home and travel to Fayetteville was extremely difficult as it was isolated in an already sparsely populated state.

St. Louis Cardinals probably had a greater following of this time while the football team was treated as a club sport in a town that was isolated from the rest of the state.

Alabama was a national power and crown jewel of the south who at the time was able to beat more talented northern teams while other southern football programs struggled to become relevant.

So Bryant probably grew up listening to Alabama football on the radio in his room as a child and didn't see any reason like many in the state to go to Fayetteville.

Bryant accepted a scholarship to play for the University of Alabama in 1931.[8] Since he elected to leave high school before completing his diploma, Bryant had to enroll in a Tuscaloosa high school to finish his education during the fall semester while he practiced with the college team

Hmmmmm, seems a little fishy even back then…..
