we already have that de facto. texas and oklahoma were playing high schools and the SEC said know what yeah come on over

My perspective from little ole Troy. We like knowing there is an opportunity to win games against big schools like LSU, Nebraska etc. With bowl games, we could get a matchup with a big school. Well until you consider most players and coaches have left the team by bowl season.
Anyway I like the SunBelt and I also like playing SEC teams every now and then.

I don’t recall a D2 team ever playing an FBS team.

One of my undergrad Alma maters is a D2 “power”. We’ve won the national championship four times this century and have been runner up three times.
Our conference has evaporated due to teams “moving up”. It’s down to three football playing members. We’ve lost automatic qualifier status.
We’re basically playing as an independent, and this year, we couldn’t get a full schedule.

I have a feeling that within the next 5-10 years, 16-20 powerhouse teams will break off from the NCAA and form their own true power conference outside of the NCAA's jurisdiction. I would prefer to go back to the 1980s/90s smaller regional conferences (I went to WAZZU in the PAC10 days). I miss the old SWC and Big East conferences. However, the Genie is out of the bottle and there is just too much money flying around with these mega-conferences to go back to regionalism.

The NCAA would be breaking anti-trust laws if they limited the teams, that's why they don't.
Instead they can only create a list of requirements that a school must meet to be at the FBS level.
If a school meets them and wants to play at the FBS level, there is nothing the NCAA can do about it.
