Your team is as pathetic as UK is at shooting free throws. That is fricking embarrassing.

Call me when you see your basketball coach win a NC in your lifetime.

Seriously? They won a title 2 years ago and have been to the final 4 three times under him. You're fricking retarded if you don't think Cal is a great coach at this point.

Deflecting and blame placed on players coming shortly.

A starting 5 consisting of five first round draft picks as well as talent off the bench.
Deepest and most talented team in the country by far and they lose 10 regular season games, some against horrible teams, don't even win their conference.
They made a good run in the tourney by just out-street balling teams and grinding out wins on the back of their massive edge in talent and athleticism alone. Not because of coaching
Any good coach would have not only won the title but gone 38-2 or 39-1 with this roster at the very worst

I agree, but this has to be a monster of an emotional roller coaster for UK fans.
Preseason #1 to struggling to finish the regular season. Then streak through the SECT to lose to UF.
THEN 4 straight last second wins only to lose a heart-breaker in the NC.

He has had more NBA first round picks than the next top 3 teams combined during this time frame...

And he has won a title and been to the final 4 three different times. Terrible coach though.

Doubt it. No matter how talented you are you have to get the players to play together. That's not exactly easy when you have 5+ players who were THE guy on their basketball teams their whole life.

Great recruiter. Good coach.

Terrible free throw coach. If those 5*s could shoot free throws they would be national champs.

Agree. He's not great at coaching free throws but that's it.

Unfortunately that is a very fundamental and very important part of the game of basketball.

Every coach, even Mike Krzyzewski, has an achilles heal. That's Cal's.

Hard to imagine a great coach being a pathetic puke at teaching the most important fundamental aspect of their profession.

You do not coach FTs, you practice FTs.
FTs will show a player's work ethic... and a coach's understanding of the important parts of the game...

How hard is it to teach guys to shoot free throws if you are a great coach Dale?

There is not enough time to do anything more than slight tweaks to a player's shot mechanics in College Basketball.
In the pros a player's shot mechanics can be re-trained to a more correct form.
But let's not kid ourselves, none of Cal's players have looked like Bill Cartwright shooting the ball, all have "good" mechanics.
Nothing is taught at the FT line, it is muscle memory that is "learned" from practice.
Cal believes more in offensive rebounding than FTs, both are important but neither is more important than the other... FTs will win (or lose) you more games than OFF Boards unless your players can convert OFF Boards to points, just getting an OFF Board is meaningless besides extending the possession you have to convert 2nd chance scoring opportunities just as you have to convert FTs.
If you look at any game, the stat line to pay attention to is at the FT line, the majority of games have the winning team shooting 70% or above, the losing team 70% or below.
Obviously the FT differential matters as well.

Ok I will rephrase. How hard is it to practice free throws? Surely a great coach can devote enough time to a teams schedule to shoot over 50% in a game.
