It's a private school which can give academic scholarships to athletes.

This and need can differ in a lot of ways.

There really isn't much of one. There's a slight one due to a program Vandy created a few years ago called "Opportunity Vanderbilt" that offers 100% coverage of "financial need" for any Vanderbilt student. However, unlike what idiots will shout, this does not mean Vanderbilt baseball can give every baseball player a full ride since any player receiving any athletic aid renders ALL financial aid from the school as counting towards the 11.7 limit.

Deeper look at how it works.

my theory is most baseball players are country music fans and country music fans tend to like Nashville.

Every student at Vandy is full ride schollie. It’s that simple.

But athletes not receiving any part of the 11.7 don't count against the 11.7.

Therefore, Vandy can give full athletic scholarships to 11 athletes and give full Opportunity Vanderbilt scholarships to the rest of the entire roster.

Which allows for full scholarships for the entire roster (!) and have 0.7 of an athletic scholarship left over.

Still think their academic arguement is perfect when paired against playing developmental or single a ball for 3-4 years.

Yes, that is true. Vanderbilt could, in theory, have this scenario unfold, but I definitely pointed out why thinking this is completely wrong. Other schools have merit-based academic scholarships that student-athletes can earn. I also pointed out that it's a simple fact most baseball recruits are not coming from poorer backgrounds where you would get a full ride based on Opportunity Vanderbilt. Please read the full post if you are going to respond.

that's a big advantage over everyone else who fills out the roster with 11.7 scholarships.

No. Read about Opportunity Vanderbilt. Unless you are dirt poor you don’t get a “free ride.” Most still owe the school the equivalent of in-state tuition. Dansby Swanson had to take out loans.

the opportunity is there for rampant "rules violations" with that scholarship program, wouldn't you agree?

Sorry that Ole Miss's baseball players can't get good grades in high school or do well on the ACT?

Ole Miss Academic Scholarships.

Sure, Vandy could try to cheat the system, but have you looked at how the university generally treats athletics? Now, do you think they are going to let any sport fudge the financial numbers?

Here we go with the “Vandy Unlimited Scholarships” crap that we hear every year. Vanderbilt gives need based aid to every single student that attends the school if they need it. When the student fills out their federal application for student aid it gives them an EFC or estimated family contribution based in their family income. The price they pay for tuition is based directly on their income. Everybody pays something and nobody gets a free ride. It’s legal because every single student gets it, not just athletes. Literally any other school that wanted to to it could do it. Let me repeat, any other school that wanted to do it could do it.

Like Rice, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Duke, Northwestern, Ivy League schools. UVA and UNC also have similar set ups. Hell, think of the damage the Service Academies could be doing right now.
